The right to defend yourself

That's the last thing you should do. If you introduce a firearm to a situation, it's for one reason and one reason only - to stop that person. Center of mass every time :)

If you miss and they tackle you and get the gun, you've made things exponentially worse with regards to the risk to your and your families' lives. If you can't justify shooting someone then you shouldn't be doing it :)

It was a tongue in cheek comment Ian. I don't advocate owning a gun let alone using it on a human. If you took a gun and shot an intruder it would be much more serious than using an object you often find in your kitchen I.e a knife to defend yourself. My sensible advice would be to not use a gun even if you have one - it is unlikely to be reasonable or proportionate force. I doubt reasonable force to defend one extends to shooting a burglar dead unless they are armed with a weapon too and trying to cause you harm.

Having a loaded gun in the house or even a baseball bat under the bed would give a barrister an argument that your use of the weapon was premeditated and not reasonable force.

A gun is often lying around in the kitchen round mine :)
