Close shave....

Hi all, I was surfing the web, and saw this...

http://www.space.com/12086-asteroid-2011-md-buzzes-earth-pictures.html

Apparently, the Earth almost got hit by an asteroid yesterday and was big enough to wipe out a city, the asteroid came within 7500 miles of Earth...

There was apprently never any risk of it hitting the Earth but with everyone banging on about it, they seem to be crapping their pants about the whole thing :D

That was really close ...

Well yeah, it was a pretty close call I guess although scientists say that there was no real risk of it hitting.

What we have to be worried about is the asteroid called Apophis...it's huge and some say it's due to hit either in 2028 and if it misses, it'll come around again in 2036. Guess we'll have to wait and see lol.

Having said that, and I know how this is going to sound lol but I did see something entirely surreal last Thursday morning...I was coming back from work at 4:30 in the morning, it was a lovely blue sky and I was driving home down a road when I just happened to look up, and this object was literally right overhead...it was bright white in colour and was about 200 feet up.

It looked just like an asteroid as it had the shape of it and the 'tail' but I lost sight of it...this thing had to be seen to believed...

Don't know what the hell it was, could of been anything but it definately was something burning and going fast...it was very low however...strange :search:

Extra terrestrials mate. They've been observing long enough and will show themselves in a more....visible way soon :)

Haha...well that was my first thought :D

I spoke to my parents about it as I couldn't believe my eyes...my mum even said it was aliens :D

It was most odd though because it didn't explode or anything, it looked like it was definately burning up, it was white hot and glowing but like I say, didn't hear anything. No explosion, no sound, nothing. I tried following it with my eyes over my head at very low altitude and after I lost sight of it, it dissapeared...

EDIT: A better way to describe this object that I saw, it was like a white hot fireball 200 feet up travelling very fast.

Well when I used to live up in Scotland we have clearer skies free from (most) light contamination. I used to have a wee play with the telescope and you'll be amazed at the things you can sometimes spot. I will have to admit though, most of the time its either :

1) Meteor

2) Space junk

3) Aircraft of some sort

4) Chinese lantern

5) Helium balloon

6) ISS flyby

7) Mars/Venus/Saturn/Moon/Other visible bright stars

8) Pesky kids playing with laser pens

Although at times I did observe some really strange things.... I wished I had a camera attached to the end of my telescope sometimes but can't afford a proper one.

Yeah I can imagine :)

I've always wanted to have a telescope, always find myself looking up at the stars...

1) It is possible that it was a Meteor but if it was, it must have been pretty big to make through the atmosphere and there was no explosion...it went straight over a residential area right above my head.

2) Space junk...I think most likely it was this to be honest...

3) Definately not an aircraft...this thing was burning up and was white hot...

4) and 5) Was no way a Chinese lantern and/or a hot air balloon...

6) Was way too low to be the ISS...at maximum this object was at 200 feet...

7) Wasn't any stars, for the same reason as the ISS...

8) And finally, wasn't kids either...I'm sure of it! :D

Maybe it was bits of this?

Johannes-Kepler ATV dropping from orbit.

Actually, to be honest, what I saw does look strikingly similar to that...could well of been.

It was a white hot glowing comet like fireball right over my head and it was very low!!

If it was only 200 feet you'd have easily seen what it was, you'd pick out every single detail at 200 feet.

I'm just guess-timating at what height that I saw this object, in reality it probably was higher...but not by alot.

It was covered by a white hot fireball...perhaps it was a piece of space junk, that's my only expanation for what I saw and it coincides so, I would say it was...
