j_jza80
I'm gonna hijack this a little if you dont mind. Would a westIe be a good dog for kids etc? Any problems with them? Some are fine, some are horrid (very similar to Staffies in that respect). Quick and Powerful little dogs. There's no way I'd trust a rescue one around children. Chris Wilson
My son is soon to be 3. He has a good understanding of how to treat his nans dogs, not to pull the around ect. He loves being around them and will follow them where ever they go. So i think its time to get a dog myself, ive always had a dog until i moved out 10 years ago. Mostly boxer dogs, which are just great if not for the constant health issues. I have a small holding with horses that is well fenced in. The dog would have a free run of the place in the day with the door open to the house for it to come in when it pleased. It would be brought in at night and stay indoors. I have norrowed the the breeds im looking at down to these. The Olde English Bulldogge American Bulldog Dogue de Bordeaux Ive looked at as much info as i can about the breeds and the releated issues they have, im starting to think the dogue is somewhat of a sickley breed with most not making it to 8 due to cancers. American bulldog seems perfect however im concerned by people passing staff xs off as bulldogs. Im finding it hard to find alot of info on the olde bulldog. Its smaller than the other two breeds but still quite a hardy things, I need something thats sturdy, not bothered by being out in the outside, short coat. If I had a small child (we don't, but *IF*) I wouldn't have a large breed dog at all. I think the ones you cite couldn't be more unsuited, sounds like you have a death wish on him Dogue de Bordeaux are interbred over here, with dodgy character and health. American Bulldogs are basically a fighting dog, domesticated a bit. Old English Bulldog is maybe the best of the three if you can stand a dog so horrendously genetically deformed as to be a (just) walking holiday fund for the local vet ? Short coat and a need to be outdoors all day in the winter don't bode too well. I would say a miniature schnauzer or a miniature bull terrier, or a miniature pinscher, miniature poodle or beagle would be worth considering, but I wouldn't know how they'd fair outside in very low temps. Our Russian Terriers and Anatolians saw minus 15 here for several mights, outside all day and night with day temps never getting above well below zero, last winter, in very basic kennelling, with no heat at all, but that's what they are bred for. The miniature schnauzer and miniature will need trimming to keep them short, but the poodle hardly moults at all, and the schnauzer a minimal amount. I would avoid terriers if left unsupervised, and most hounds, especially sight hounds.
probrox
How about a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have a brilliant temperament and are great with kids and other animals. Ours is 18 months old now and he has never snarled at another dog, even when they have attacked him. He's also had our nieces pulling him about and he couldn't care less. They are very loyal and love to be around their owners, but also love being outdoors. Ours spends most of the day in the garden playing with his toys or watching birds.
