The Raven
My son is soon to be 3. He has a good understanding of how to treat his nans dogs, not to pull the around ect. He loves being around them and will follow them where ever they go. So i think its time to get a dog myself, ive always had a dog until i moved out 10 years ago. Mostly boxer dogs, which are just great if not for the constant health issues. I have a small holding with horses that is well fenced in. The dog would have a free run of the place in the day with the door open to the house for it to come in when it pleased. It would be brought in at night and stay indoors. I have norrowed the the breeds im looking at down to these. The Olde English Bulldogge American Bulldog Dogue de Bordeaux Ive looked at as much info as i can about the breeds and the releated issues they have, im starting to think the dogue is somewhat of a sickley breed with most not making it to 8 due to cancers. American bulldog seems perfect however im concerned by people passing staff xs off as bulldogs. Im finding it hard to find alot of info on the olde bulldog. Its smaller than the other two breeds but still quite a hardy things, I need something thats sturdy, not bothered by being out in the outside, short coat. edge
Dobermann? We don't have kids ourselves but the nephews and nieces are over the dogs love them to bits and are VERYprotective of them even only seeing them a few times a year. They need good daily exercise like any dog really and having a large are to roam is a good benefit to any dog. My aunt breeds dogues and vet bills are high. A crossbred dog will probably live longer than most pure breeds and life is normally shorter for larger dogs.
The Raven
The mrs does not like dogs with "pointy faces" She thinks they look evil. We have lots of wildlife around the house, rabbits mosty. Anything like a beagle/jack ect would be forever tracking and or killing them. Not that its a bad thing but i dont want to have lumps of rabbit all over the place and or a dog stuck down a rabbit/badger hole.
Dyer864
Depending on wot dog you want a guard dog, working dog or utility etc. Seems like you want a largeish dog ! I've had a few dogs , but the one i have now is the most intelligent ! loves children and a constant bundle of energy and needs exercise as it's a working dog a 'Bearded collie' , so friendly and obedient . but a medium size dog. Done my checks before i got one , Good life expectancy 14-15 yrs and hardy dog, of course gorra check out the old hip score scenario !! plus one of brightest and trainable dogs around . Swampy442
Youre worried about a boxers health issues yet you want an English Bulldog? They are a health minefield! Ive had 2 boxers recently and, barring an accident invoving a football in the face (ahem) they have been fine.
mustang
A cross of some kind would be your best bet, probably healthier with a better temperment. My parents have a similar set up, they're retired and have a 10month old bloodhound cross, she's lovely and loves to be outdoors, interested in whatevers going on. Google them as for horses and rabbit holes thats what the man and his ferrets are for. Means i dont have to clean up rabbit guts from the house
C_Strike
european dobermanns really are working dogs, unlike the american counterparts that are little more than pets... you realy dont want to cross a dobermann, especially EU strains lol love them though the missus is scared of them. i wouldnt be to keen on free roaming dobermann with kids. They need a strong owner with time to give them, maybe having it free roam could give the dog too much dominance. a well rounded, intelligent and kid friendly breed that may apply for your needs is a GSD. It will be obedient and incredibly affectionate but also look after you, your land, your kids and will always be trying to please you. I would say collie but quite often working collies are stubborn and not too keen on kids. For a small pet dog, you really cant go wrong with a staffy though particularly with kids.. they are incredible around kids. For a big dog, if your budget extends, maybe a boerboel? they're absolutely massive but are fantastic dogs
Holden1989
I have horses and a big garden etc and the most amazing dog ever is my chocolate Labrador, constantly sticks by my side, mega obedient, fantastic with my year old niece and he has common sense around the horses. l33wgn
I could be a little bias here but if you've had boxers before why would you want to change?? I've had boxers all my life and my current one is two and hes mad as!! Wouldn't change him for the world though. he's great with kids and dependant on how you raise a boxer they can either be the most loving dogs around or a loyal and effective guard dog! I have had other dogs but I don't think you can beat a boxer On my phone but I've got pics on my mybook profile http://m.facebook.com/home.php?refsrc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2Fsearch&refid=9&m_sess=BPZqj-cTBo-t4z&_rdr#!/photo.php?fbid=10150196181965276&id=559115275&set=a.10150196168590276.440091.559115275&refid=
Nic
If I had kids I would go for a bread that is generally placid, good natured and loving; Labrador, Spaniel, Setter would be the top of my list.

Dyer864
siberian husky,! gawjus dogs, cant wait to get one, just dont mind the malting of hair stage I must disagree there ! I had one for 6mth's has a friend couldn't handle it, ate her house absolute nightmare he was !( had to relocate him as he didn't get on with my dog , very sad, stunning dog ) end of the day they are a wild dog , very domineering to be Alpha dog and very tempramental/strong willed and a mind of their own, not good around other dogs aswell obviously the way you bring it up / train as a pup as something to do with that aswell ! They're not out of reach, you're right that they need good training and leadership, but they're not wolves or anything, they're still dogs and behave like dogs. As long as you know the breed mentality they're pretty easy really. Ours our trained to sit and wait etc. They're left alone while we're at work and just sleep, basically they're just dogs.
