Iphone 4, tethering and jailbreaking...

I've recently moved into a newbuilt house and unfortunately it will takes weeks before I can get internet (2+ weeks for BT and god knows how long to get Sky BB transferred over).

I have a Gen1 3 Mobile HuaWei MiFi thingy which is great when it works. It doesn't seem to like being turned on for more than 1 hour...

So I turn to my iPhone 4 as my old HTC can be turned into a Wifi hotspot. More bad news it seems as iPhone 4's hotspot function requires you do pay extra £££ for limited usage...

I did a quick Google and I have now the following options:

1) Get a Gen2 MiFi and pray this time it works better...

2) Fork out extra £££ for Vodafone's tethering plan....

3) Jailbreak my iPhone4 and install Cydia

I am tempted to Jailbreak as I've bought my phone from Apple so it's not locked or anything. However I've heard a lot of bad things about jailbroken iPhone4s... I have a lot of songs and purchased apps on my phone so I really do not want to loose them...

Any advice?

Get a cheap htc and save yourself any hassle. I just jail broke my iPad and I'm yet to find anything useful. I tried a few "top 20" apps but removed most of them. The one I have kept allows me to access the file system, not had a proper go with it yet but it looks promising.

How cheap is the cheapest HTC that supports hotspot? I guess I can transfer my 3 mobile card over from my Huawei modem...

If you upgrade the iPhone 4 to IOS 4.3.2 or the latest 4.3.3, they you have the hotspot functionality native in IOS and it works great...

Do they? I am on the 4.3.2 on my iphone atm. I don't see any hotspot functionality except for the one which requires me to call up Vodafone and setup a price plan. Cheapest is +£5 per 500MB and you must only use that purely for data and it expires in 30 days :(

edit: Just read Steve's reply :D Yeap Steve's right. I don't mind paying since I pay 10 quid now for my 3 mobile Huawei but the only problem is it wont turn on anymore :p This will be only for a temporary basis (circa 2 months) so just looking for something reliable to use in that time.

Will look into Jailbreaking but don't really know if I should do it since one of my colleague mentioned that Apple can detect jailbroken products when you connect to the store and will invalidate tons of stuff...

Just buy one from ebay, I will be selling my desire soon (which is what I am using to tether my iPad) but there are a few people in line. I'll be selling around the £140 mark so it gives you an idea of the type of phone you can get for not a lot of money.

That way it saves you from messing around with your iPhone.

Sound idea. The Gen2 Huawei modem is around 75 quid new from ebay though might give that a look. Thing I like about the modem is that I can top it up anytime I wish but the downside is the battery life. Wonder if the Gen2 ones are better....

If you go to Settings, don't you have an option called Internet Sharing? I do and are on 4.3.2. I don't pay anything extra. I think my subscription comes with 10GB data pr month.. Obcene amount as I've only used 1,6gb since I got the phone (which was when i came out aprox)

I don't get the point with using a cydia app, as that still uses your carrier data signal and contract..

MiWi is pretty good.

Get a 3 PAYG Sim, shove it in a cheap android phone - and enjoy all you can eat data with wireless connections on the Android OS

Yup, another vote for this :)

Although I use a google nexus S device :) Any android above 2.3 should do the job.
