GFX card advice

Recommended Posts

There seem to be quite a few gamer types here so am seeking some advice on a new graphics card. After having a look through the various usual sites it seems I'm really out of touch with PC hardware these days!

I'm after something fairly cheap, but more powerful than I have now. Not looking to spend more than £100 (a pittance i know!). Is that possible with this budget in mind?

Current spec is:

Asus 9800GTX+

E6750 CPU

2GB DDR2 PC8500 RAM (changing to 4GB or 8GB soon)

850watt power supply

TIA!

Radeon 5770 imho

Good suggestion, I had looked at these but they are not that much more powerful than the card I have now, not sure it's worth updating if the performance difference isn't that great.

I'd go with that or a Nvidia 460 (Not sure what they are like price wise). I have 2 5770s in crossfire but even that is overkill for most stuff. I would have still use my 4870 if it did direct X 11.

The 460 seems more closer to what I'm looking for, but they seem to be a bit above my budget (£120 for the 1Gb model). I found a 550Ti for £96, this seems to be mid way between the 5770 and the 460 and is on budget, but not sure if they are a good card...

Buy a 5770 for now, then when they reduce in price again buy another and x-fire it? :)

What resolutions you looking for regarding gaming? how many monitors etc? are you after low noise / heat / power consumption? Are you that much of a stickler for your £100 budget?

You can pick up a 5770 for £78 on Overclockers at the moment, pretty good price.

Are you upgrading for any games in particular? or just want something new and shiny :)? I have a bunch of PCs and the one I have downstairs is an old AMD dual core 2.2GHz with a Radeon 2900xt 512mb and even that old clunker runs stuff like portal 2 at 1680*1050 without AA well, it seems to just come down to Crysis and how important that is ;)

Dragging this back from last month... ;)

First of all, thanks for the suggestions, however looking at the specs I don't think the ones above (and in my original price range) are going to be worthwhile upgrading to... So, looking for something a little more expensive, but not too much ;)

What do you guys think of this one, ATi Radeon HD 6850 @ £119: http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=GC-XR685H1

It seems to be the most powerful available without making a massive step up in price...

Also, it lists as PCI-E 2.1, I wasn't aware PCI-E had changed (again!), any ideas if my mainboard supports it as I can't seem to find any confirmation so far searching google... It's an Asus P5QL/EPU

Bump, can anyone help with this part... I'm still a bit confused if the mainbaord needs changing. It seems not, but any confirmation from the knowledgeable chaps would be welcome :)
