Heater control

I've had a weird little problem that's been getting worse over recent months, but as it's warmer at this time of year I hadn't noticed it.

My heater is blowing cold air.

When I twiddle the temp knob a few times, the heating then comes on, but not every time.

I know this could be a really dumb question, but would it be a matter of replacing the heater control thingy, or can it lead to a much worse, and more complicated affair?

I think the heater matrix is working, as I haven't had any leakages, or the dreaded soaking in the footwells just yet.

Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Actually the motor you can hear is a good sign: it's at one end of the rod I'm talking about. The other end is a bit tricky to describe but it's somewhere behind the heater dash controls.

My best guess at the moment is that your heater control knob is faulty. It's unlikely to need a new matrix I would think: knackered matrices either leak as you've described, or get clogged up slowly over time but still manage to put out a tiny bit of luke-warm air (especially with the fan turned to its lowest setting and heater setting to maximum heat).

Update: Today my heater control unit decided to go off completely. I've checked the fuses, but they are all okay. The lights come on with the headlights that's no power to any of the controls including aircon and rear window heater.

Does that mean that the control unit is knackered?

I'm still getting heat out, but without the fan on. Luckily the temperature is around 22°, so I'm not freezing.

Does anyone have a spare heater control unit that I could test. Preferably with the blue conversion. ;)
