Single Turbo Conversion

I know this must have been posted a thousand times before, so I apologise in advance.

 

I currently drive a 350bhp Fiat Coupe and really love it as it's the first turbo car I've owned. I've always thought Supras had incredible road presence and always wanted to own one. With the future looking good for the missus and I, I might be able to afford one soon.

 

I'd ideally like a single, as it will be stored away and only be driven over weekends if the weather was good as I'm after 500bhp+.

 

I've noticed that the singles sell for a lot more than good t/t's, so here is my question.

 

What is involved in converting a t/t to a single? And why do singles go for so much more?

 

I can only assume the engine internals have to be forged to handle the increase in power etc?

If I was you I'd buy one already done. I didn't and I converted my TT which was really enjoyable and I loved the build as it progressed but I must of done close to 18k plus the price of the car already. I run stock internals on 644 rwhp ( how long for who knows).

 

You can convert a single on about 10k if your wise in your choices.

 

You could get a nice singles for 15k+.

 

Good luck with road you choose to go down.

Read a few of the build threads in the project cars section.

500BHP and you won't need to forge the internals.

They go for so much more because to build a good reliable single costs a lot more than buying one that's already been done.

Knowing that this has been covered a thousand times, did you actually use the search?

 

There are MANY threads on this very subject, from projects to shopping lists, all covering exactly what you are after.

 

I knew someone would say this, but I was too lazy to go through the posts. :D

 

I'm surprised that you can run that sort of power on stock internals and even more so that you've spent £18k and still didn't forge the engine!!

 

I will have to see what costs so much, bloody hell.

Turbo kit, fueling upgrades, transmission upgrades, valvetrain upgrades, ECU/mapping, cooling upgrades, exhaust, electronics, gauges, etc. etc. A basic, reliable 500-600hp conversion using quality parts (not cheap ebay crap) will cost £10K+.

 

And why do singles go for so much more?

 

Because of the above.

 

If buying a converted single Supra I would want to know exactly what has been done to it, see receipts for work done and know who had done the work. As Supra prices drop there seem to be more and more conversions being done on a tight budget using cheap poor quality parts, if you don't know what you're looking for, buying a converted single turbo Supra is a big risk and could turn into a huge money pit to put right.

A stock engine in good condition can handle 600+hp, most Supras have a decent number of miles on them now though, so a rebuild with stock/aftermarket parts would be advisable.

Gaz, I've certainly looked through the classifieds, but as Nic said, I would want to make 100% sure what I'm buying if I decide to do so. I've been looking into turbo'd S2000's as they can be very powerful, but very few people in the UK seem to go down that route - not sure why as there are loads in the US.

 

So then, how reliable would a 600bhp single be? Taking into account it won't be used as an everyday car.

If built and mapped by someone who knows what they are doing, using quality parts, then they can be very reliable, in fact a single turbo setup is a whole lot simpler than the stock sequential system, so far less to go wrong.

 

However there is a huge difference between a properly built single turbo Supra and one that has just had a big turbo and a few shiny bits nailed onto it.

I couldn't live with myself using it as a daily driver. I hate using my Coupe as a daily driver as it is.

 

I mean, the costs don't come close to that of the Supras, but I've had the car only 10 months and have already spent nearly £5k on it and have receipts of another £8k from the previous owner.
