I'm having enough of a problem trying to restore from my backed up HD.

Used silver keeper and trying to use the restore function in disk utility if anyone has any helpful info?

Sorry Ian, not used that software before.

Are you restoring from an external HD?

Yes, external HD via USB. :)

Good man.

You guess correct. Currently just creating a disk image of my backup to restore from.....it's not a quick process!

Will perhaps need to look into Time Machine if it'll be much easier than this.

I'd recommend Time Machine for backups too (Scott has a flashy wireless HD iCapsule or something) :D

Though TM does hog up quite a bit of process when it does it's thing.

Looks like this won't be as easy as I first thought :(

Does anyone have an OSX Tiger 10.4.11 disc I can borrow?

Alternatively I may just take this as an opportunity to upgrade to Lion?

I have snow leopard if that's any god to you? I may have Tiger somewhere will gave a look.

I don't know if I'll be able to use snow leopard as such (that said they don't seem to request a product key?).

If you could check the Tiger version it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers

Ian

Edit: actually, I guess I wouldn't actually be using the install as such, just the disk utility?

Right. Have £130 left over from my birthday, so was thinking I could just sod the MacBook which is now approx 6 years old or more and get myself a new Mac Mini to hook up to the tv.

Has anyone used one of these with the tv and can provide a bit of feedback? Will of course keep the MacBook, but it'll just be used for a quick browse of the interwebnet when the Mrs is watching Eastenders :D

Nope your startup disk could be corrupted or bad permissions. You can boot off any osx DVD that's firmware compatible with your laptop and run disk utility to check the disk and you can also do a hardware test

If its Lion then the you will need to press R to boot into the recovery partition.

Did your SSD support TRIM?

The SSD has now been formatted IMI, with a fresh install of Tiger.

I need to try and get the backed up copy of my hd recovered onto it though, which as it turns out isn't possible due to my 'bugged' os install discs.

If the SSD has some faults then this will be picked up by hardware tests.

Not been hearing great reviews regarding SSD's so I am sticking away from them for now (desktop wise).

Caseys - This might interest you more than the other folks! :D

====================================================================

We got a load of SSD's in to build a VDI solution (Whiptail boxes), Exchange 2010, XenApp.

Plus some 3PAR Storage to come soon to have a play with.

I've got a Vertex2 with TRIM in my MBP - had it for 3 months now and works flawlessly. I am aware of the challenges with SSD which is why I tend to backup my MBP every weekend just incase.

The performance advantages alone are enough for me to never even consider a traditional HDD anymore.

So seems like the issue wasnt with the SSD after all - seems like a corrupted file structure which I am surprised wasnt resolved when booting in recovery mode.

What did you use to back up the SSD - if TM then you can use migration assistant to recover your content to the freshly installed SSD.

Not TM. Was backed up using Silver Keeper. This should have been selectable using restore within Disk Utility, however the bug I linked to on an earlier post meant I couldn't select the source / destination.

I thought migration assistant was only available when using FireWire?

not sure about Tiger, certainly not the case with Leopard, SL or Lion.

I don't have a mac mini but I do have my iMac plugged into the TV.
