Doesn't work. The only way I could get it to scroll was to hold my finger on the text so that the magnifying glass came up, from there I dragged it down.

What an absolute farce this thing is.

Your to slow man:) hold one finger in the box and scroll with the other before the magnifier thingy appears.

You have to copy and paste your pictures directly into your email one by one

That's woefully unintuitive. Not only is it wholly unapparent what you have to do, there is also a time limit on it! Who designed this? HotBlack Desiato?

Flipping heck. That's ridiculous lol. I held it and a grey box appeared, thought it was that but didn't work so tried touching and instantly flicking..... It worked.

Crazy setup but at least it works now, thanks.

For sale thread in "other items" on the cards?? :D

I did think about it but the 10+ hours battery life is absolutely fantastic. I'll get used to the crap setup, I'm happy enough with it as a piece of hardware and it will do what I need it to do. It's definitely a fashion thing though, because a techy toy it certainly isn't.

My gripe is all the apple fans who tout this thing as the digital lord and saviour. There are lots of major flaws in the os and countless minor ones. It has no versatility at all.

And to prove that you truly hate the iPad you should give it away for free, to me :)

I don't hate it, in fact I quite like it Lol.

I'm more pointing out the annoyances of the device and how I was expecting more given the people raving about it and the iPhone.

This thread is me pointing out the negatives and my disappointment at how many there are, the positives are fairly apparent and well covered by the fanbois :D

...It could be so good if Apple actually took any interest in what the consumer wants....

They do - they put huge amounts of effort into that.

Requirement #1: Look good in the coffee shop.

Requirement #2: see #1

We have one. It's shit. Only good thing about it is the instant switch on when you just want to quickly check something.

Oi Scott - I've been stuck in wiki hell reading about Hitchhikers' Guide ever since I checked my spelling of Hotblack Desiato. I hope you're happy. Having said that, I've also ordered the 6th book in the trilogy, as I never knew it existed. Thanks :D

It's a paper book though, sorry, very old skool ;)

It's far from perfect but a brilliant device still, if it wasn't then it wouldn't have built a new technology market.

I have been working in the IT industry for 9 years & remember when I tested the first tablet machine 7 odd years ago from Toshiba. Basically it was a laptop with a swivel screen which also was a touch screen (though mainly used with a pen). That was clunky, was running windows, the touch screen was awful! But we still liked it & said it was progressing in the right direction.

Now if I compared it to that device we have come a huge way! It is no way a replacement for a laptop and I doubt tablets are based on being a replacement but more of a mobile solution which covers 80% of the functionality. The real design & intend of this device is more of a media centre, I use mine to just mainly browse websites/forums, read magainzes, watch news, books/comic, citrix into my office, watch movies & use it to organise events. The biggest thing it gives me is speed, battery life over a laptop & not to mention it's size.

I played around with a few tablets before getting the iPad, the closest one I found which I nearly went for was the Motorla Xoom which I thought was a good device too but the build quality in the end won over the Xoom.

It is far from perfect but as you know everything has pro's & con's.

Sorry to drag on but just to quickly touch on the flash subject, I have a lot of people mention this to me & a lot of people who do are just about able to make a call on their phone. I work closely with Sophos in the firm I work for & I manage the security aspect of virus protection for all the devices in the firm. A huge percentage of them are java based viruses, a lot from websites containing flash & using java. Not using flash in a way is a god send, although I do have to agree at times it can be very frustrating if the website has flash content. Though a lot of websites nowadays are pushing towards HMTL5 & testing against Apple OS devices or have applications solely for their use. It will get better, well here's to hoping!

Oh by the way I wrote this on my iPad & the keyboard is brilliant. ;)

iTunes is rubbish though!

Agree, although I do like the library of Itunes, as an app it is clunky. Mac store will no doubt replace the itunes in the not so distant future.

Certainly not for everyone but the 7M people buying it per month seem to be fairly satisfied.

The library is superb, I can read a book on my iPad & then continue from the last page on my iPhone!

That for me is brilliant as I can continue reading on the train into work. :)

See I don't agree at all here. As a media device it isn't great due to the lack of media support. It's good as an apple media device but apple really need to branch out a bit so that the thing works better out the box. In my opinion it is a fashion icon that sells, hence the high sales figures. Loads of people seem brainwashed into thinking it's great too. These people aren't high end users in my opinion, as high end users would see the restrictions in place.

Also 80% Abz? And you say you work in IT lol. Come on be serious here. You are lucky if you can do 10% IMO. The browser is the best I have used on a handheld device, it's also the best on-screen keyboard I have used on a touchscreen device. But it in no way does even close to what a laptop is capable of. The possibilities of a laptop are endless, this thing stops on page one before you are clutching at straws with "beer drinking" apps. And the list of things it can do are themselves limited, as I have pointed out.

There is no doubt that apple have moved the game on. Other makers have had the kick up the backside too which is also upping the game. If this thing was running android it would be almost perfect, but android has it's glitches too.

The flash doesn't really bother me to be honest. I'm sure it will come up from time to time but I can live without it.

I should really rephrase that, it does 80% of what a lot of 'general' people use a laptop for, things like move data between devices & being able to adjust settings more are things which the iPad doesn't do, that people use laptops for. And yes with a laptop you can do 80% more than an iPad (we are talking techy stuff here like edit the OS, drivers, build data bases, SQL, backups, Programming, virtual platforms, a whole host of things) but I don't see it as being a laptop replacement, far from it.

With regards to a fashion icon? 100% agree with you, when I got the first iPhone when it came out, nobody had one & I had been following Apple closely & wanted one badly as I thought it was a technical marvel. The people who had the first iPhone's were generally more technical (not everyone though). Since then I have seen so people want an iPhone but they don't know why they want one! It went from being something techy & exciting to Joe Bloggs has an iPhone moans constantly about battery life but loves because he watches a movie into work & listens to music all day & calls his Girlfriend for 1 hour a day. As you stated it has seriously turned into a fashion icon. Also with product placement you are constantly seeing it in movies, on TV but with the products that look this good & well built it has brought in a rift of customers.

One thing you can't deny is how sexy it looks ;)

I hope this app helps to just drag and drop etc... without using itunes. It maybe what your after, greater access to folders if jailbroken of course.

I have to admit i jailbreaked mine then put VLC media player on my iphone and another app to play mp3's

Without jailbroken not much i can do with it that i want too.

You've missed out the basics that it can't do though Abz.

You can't view what videos you want, you are restricted. You can play 1 decent format that I have found (*.mp4). Forget about avi, mkv, wmv and all the other popular video types without installing different apps and basically circumventing the whole Apple system.

Thinking that the iPad can view videos, view pictures, listen to music etc etc is an absolute con. Because everything that it can do is restricted, a laptop is not. It can do about 10% of the things on a laptop, but only to 10% of the extent that a laptop can.

I want to watch a slideshow.... oh wait, it will only let me view it from newest to oldest. That leaves me 2 options, watching my little girl get younger Benjamin Buton style, or watching random pictures come up in shuffle mode. If I want anything else I need to fudge the photo details in order to change the order of them.

Take the blinkers off bud :p

That looks much better. I've pretty much got it stuffed with what I am after now though, OPlayer HD has made the transition far easier.

It is flawed alright, have no mistake I am aware of that :D but I can tell you the reason why.

Nowadays the general public wanted a simple system with a simple interface. They don't care about how it works but they just want a simple yes & no & 1/2/3/4 approach. Techies like yourself won't like that, as like you say it is restrictive. I am rubbish at explaining this but if you download the app WIRED (Its actually a magazine), they have a new article there which really hits the nail on the head. With the apple devices they want you to base your life around iTunes and storing everything in libraries, they don't like a messy folder listing (that does help when backing up actually), but basically they want you to BUY the films and use the format Apple have set it too. This all goes down to the dumbing down of the software for the end user, a lot of people won't know all the different formats you mentioned or if say they are given a video format & then need say a codec's to make it work they will be all over the shop. If you read the article it will be able to better explain what I mean.

Can I put my blinkers on again dude? :D

I agree with that mate, I think it's wrong though, very wrong. Apple are telling people what they want, I think I said that earlier, rather than listening to what people want. You cannot say that the pad does 80% of what a laptop does, it doesn't. It does a fraction of what a laptop does, and at that it's to a fraction of the capacity. Yes you could say that a lot of people won't use the laptop to those lengths, and ergo the ipad would be fine for that type of user, but if you have a look at some of the comments on the ipad on this very forum (including your own) they are very 1 sided and not at all a clear and honest picture of the way things are with the device. You can't assume you are talking to a non-techie when recommending the iPad, you surely have to assume they are a full on end user who wants to use it to it's limits. In that case it's limits are here for all to see and there are LOADS of them.

How many of the non-techies are going to be able to get a DVD or a Blu-Ray onto the thing to watch? They would need to know about convertors and codecs in order to even contemplate the idea. Yes, they can download already converted movies/shows/documentaries/videos etc but then they are restricted to what they can view.

What Apple want to do is corner the market, the trouble is the more they are forcing people into their softwares and way of doing things, the more they are forcing people away. Yes they have pulled the market right into the 21st century but they are so stubborn in their ways that they are being blown out of the water by the flexability of the competition. Once people start to see past the bells and whistles apple will either need to change their way of thinking or they will be going due south IMO.

ABZ and scott... you are both spot on.

the apple marketing machine is a monster in its self and apple certainly did raise the bar a very long way but due to the controlling nature of apple they are forcing you to use their applications and software without the possibility of changing them if it doesn't work for you.

Android also has its issues, but if you think something is broken, you can change it. For example, the camera software on my sgs is different to my girlfriends SGS in respect that hers allows you to flip the camera to the front facing one. Mine doesnt do this, so I pulled the camera apk out of hers and installed it on my. hey presto, fixed and working to how I want. This is the reason why I like android, flexible, customisable and not restricted to itunes!

But, each has it's own market-sector really. I love the iPod/iPhone integration - it stops me bringing my iPod to work. I like the concept of the iPad and I might get an iPad 2 from the states to bring home for a play - but I'm not too bothered if I don't. However, the Android is more for the techie, deep down, with companies like HTC putting their thin veneer of identity on it, like Sense. Rooting is comparable to jailbreaking, in that it allows you to do more than the OEM decided was right. Custom Android Roms vs Jailbroken firmware, etc.

Horses for courses as everyone has said.
