The Ipad is nowhere near as good as I expected....

With the way you guys rave about this thing I was expecting a flawless media experience. It's anything but to be honest. Itunes is so restrictive it's nigh on useless when it comes to actually using anything I want.

I can't just copy pictures onto it, I need to sync with a particular folder. This means that I have to have a seperate folder for pictures that I want on my Ipad. Useless no.1

When I eventually get my pictures on there, I can't order them anyway I want to. I am stuck with them in date order..... and even worse than that reverse date order. I have some lovely pictures of my little girl that I would enjoy watching (from birth till now) but everytime I try that it's like watching the curious case of Iris. Useless no.2

It can only play about 2 types of video. No compatibility for Avi, Mkv, WMV, etc. The japanese £30 copies can do more than this thing can on that front. I know, I know, you can get programs to view the different file types on. I've tried 3 now, and paid for all 3, and they are absolutely hopeless. Cannot play AC3 so I need to convert anything I want to watch anyway. Useless no.3

I made an email today and wanted to attach a picture.... can't be done. That's clever, the only way to send a picture in an email is to select the picture first and send it in an email, from there you can put in the text etc. Anymore than 3 pictures and computer says no though. Useless no.4

There are LOADS of little annoyances about this device. It could be so good if Apple actually took any interest in what the consumer wants, it can't be that hard to update the software to make it really useful.

I bought this thing to watch videos, store music and store my pictures. I don't want to store all my pictures so I'm stuck with creating a seperate folder, I have 3 copies of the same file between my PC and my Ipad  If I want to watch a movie I need to convert it. At least with the music I can just transfer it over and forget about it by turning the syncing off.

Anyway, not impressed. Please stop raving about how good the ipad and the iphone are, almost wish I had bought an android now :(

The joys of branding and marketing...

Must admit i really like my iPhone but can`t see the massive appeal of an iPad.

Oh, and i can play flash on mine so its more user friendly than most!

I have an Ipod Touch, an Ipad but I went with HTC for the phone. The Iphone is good, but it's too restricted for my liking, much the same as the trouble I'm having with the ipad.

Basically the ipad is just a big ipod touch/iphone. I must admit that I thought they would have got the finger out and turned it into a full on media tablet, that was the main reason I bought it. Don't get me wrong I'll get over the hurdles OK, I just wasn't expecting this much work. I thought it would be good to go out of the box.

I can't send photos over bluetooth. Even though I've downloaded an app that lets me join my network and share my network files, I can't actually do anything with them as the video won't play and the photos save to the apps location rather than the ipods photo location.

What a job I could do for Apple.

Run Cydia :D

Then your treated to a whole new world :D

Give me examples. Does it let me access the harddrive properly? How does it help with the video issues? As I say i've tried 3 different players and none of them will play most of my AVI files (picture but no sound, even on some MP3 encoded ones).

kinda more the for the geeky people bud, when it comes to running different software on it, iv got the The A-Team running on mine, albeit after i converted it, 20mins, i know that dont help. But i'll convert a bunch of films and drag and drop into itunes once done.

You can SSH into it creating folders etc and do all sorts.

Have a play, see what you think?

Just read up on it and it's not what I'm after, nothing will play the files I am after and for the photos I want to use the standard photo app.

Jailbreaking the Ipad is like buying the best mac you can buy and running windows on it because the OS sucks. It basically shows how bad IOS on the ipad actually is, you have to jailbreak the thing and install unverified tweaks to make it useful and get rid of the awful iTunes lol.

I'll grin and bear it, really unimpressed. Funny you don't hear about all these negative aspects of these devices on here, the owners tout them like they are the dogs biscuits. If they got an Android phone, and viewed it in an unbias nature, their eyes would really open up, granted they aren't as slick to look at and certain aspects aren't as smooth, but they are infinitely more useful and far far easier to do what you bloody well want with.

Already got SSH sorted on it, it's useless as all the files I would actually want to transfer either don't work or they get saved to the SSH apps folder, rather than something simple like "My pictures" where the photos app can access. Granted I can convert and transfer them but trying to convert MKV into a working format is proving difficult, I got it working great but the resolution was mental (even though I set it to copy the original). With the time taken to convert, the extra 5 mins it takes to transfer isn't really an issue so SSH isn't as useful as it could be.

I feel your pain (posted a year ago about the video upload problem) have to say though, the camera connection kit works well and uploads far quicker than my pc. Also the photobucket free app is useful.

Ive heard there is a new video conversion app (that works) coming soon.

Oh we do pipe up, we just get called apple haters ;) :D

Apple has had its day imho. There are far better devices and systems out there now. Unfortunately they get called apple clones.... when quite frankly they show you what apple should of done in the first place.

That's how it's looking to me to be honest. I'm not an Apple hater, but I'm not a lover either. I just buy whatever product suits my needs best. With HTC it feels as if I choose what I need, with Apple it feels like they are making the choices for me. Granted I'm only comparing the 2 as it is the 2 choices I have experience with, there will be a raft of options out there.

On the plus side, I just found a program called OPlayer HD, it's played everything I have thrown at it so far (non HD). It seems to cope very well so the future is looking less bleak lol.

Limitations are 800x600 for non xvid and 1280x720 for xvid. I can honestly live with that, I'm not after HD in my palm, I just want to be able to download and play with minimal fuss. HD is for my big TV, it's hardly going to be represented on a handheld.

If I were after such a thing I would go for an Archos (I have an Archos AV700)

As Scott stated and my initial thought the ipad IS just a big Iphone -phone of course. I cant stand I tunes and dont think you should have to jailbreak *current* technology to get the best out of it. Also I think Apples products are way overpriced in the market mainly down to the sleak looks. I would take an Archos 9 tablet over iPad any day of the week

I like my gadgets but apples gear has never got me over excited.

iPad's look great but practicle..... nope

+1 Apple are so over rated you cant to as much as you can on android, and not supporting abobe flash player is just daft! And the fact your need a computer to even use the ipad!

I find the lack of flash annoying, other than that I think its great. in fact, I really like itunes - the pod and vodcasts are brilliant.

I dont use it to watch the movies that I have ripped, instead use it for tvcatchup, iplayer and the like.

regarding photos, not sure about the challenge that you are having. mine is fully sync'd up with my MAC and all the photos look fine (dont need to have seperate folders / multiple copies of pics, etc).

maybe itunes on windows is a different experience to itunes on the mac.

The problem is that I have around 12000 pictures, most of which I don't want on my iPad. They are also huge (some 8mb) so I dont want to take up loads of room for the sake of a 9 inch screen. If I were to sync with my pictures the iPad would be full and I would be waiting all day lol. I therefor create a separate folder and put in the pictures I want on there, I then drop the res a bit to bring the file size down.

This means I have an original copy of the pictures, a smaller copy of the pictures on my pc and obviously the copy on the iPad.

On the android you plug in the USB, browse to the pictures and drag and drop what you want. You can also send by Bluetooth or access the network to copy wirelessly.

It's a difficult transition moving to the ipad I can assure you lol.

I'm not normally a fan of these gadgety things, my mobile phone cost £20 and doesn't even have a camera and my MP3 player I can't even remember the brand of :) But they do actually just plain work properly and do what I want them to do without fail - what more could you ask for?

So with that out of the way, I'm actually interested in the new HP Touchpad. There are a couple of reasons for this. One, I should be getting one for free as I work for HP in an area that needs to start using them :D Two, it uses webOS, which I think is a whole lot more open and user friendly than the locked down apple rubbish that Scott is having so many problems with (as would I, that list is a litany of style-over-substance poor UI design). If/when I get my mitts on one, I'll try and remember to post on here somewhere about what it's like. Seeing as I love a useful clean user interface and I hate gadgets for the sake of "cool-gadgety-ness" (i.e. almost everything apple ever made/copied) I'll be pretty critical about it if it has clunkiness, even though I work for them :)

Trying to reply to you I just found another gripe......

Anyone any idea how to scroll in a reply box? If the text is larger than the box I have no way to reply. Fortunately in this case Ian's post fitted just inside the "go advanced" window.

Anyway Ian I can't see anything being as restrictive as this. It's like buying a brilliant keyboard but only allowed to use one finger to type. Some really nice touches ruined by ridiculous barriers.

Select the reply tab.

Then select the text box so the keyboard appears.

Hold one finger in the text box whilst scrolling with the other:)

Scott, how are you attaching pictures to an email? You should be able to attach more than 3

The only way I have been able to attach pictures is by going into them and selecting send, then selecting the ones I want to add to the email. For some reason if you go into email, then you want to compose, you can't add attachments. Mental IMO.

I must admit I haven't tried it on my iPad. A guy I work with had it in and came to me for help as he wanted to send his friend some pictures. He spent HOURS writing the email (literally) then couldn't work out how to attach. He brought it to me and I thought it would be straight forward, after a lot of head scratching I gave up and went to google where I found it couldn't be done with the stock email app. After faffing around with it some more I found that you could email pictures from the gallery, soooooo I copied the text from his email and then created a new email from the gallery selecting a number of pictures. When the email came up the pictures didn't show. If I selected a small amount (2 or 3) it was fine, but if I went with what he wanted (10) it just wouldn't show them.

Absolutely hopeless IMO. I'll be using it for viewing my emails, and the odd reply, but there is no way on earth this thing is a laptop replacement.

Thanks for the tip by the way, I'm off to try it :D
