Peed off with Brands Hatch

Went to Brands Hatch for an evening track day tonight and I got black flagged because my exhaust scraped over the bumpy bits of the circuit.

They gave me one chance to fix it which I tried by tieing it up slightly higher which didn't really help and told me to go home. My exhaust has been like this for 2 years with numerous track work around the country and its never even been mentioned before let alone this!

There reason for not letting me run was because they've just had the track resurfaced and I will wear it out! My reply was "why the hell didn't you have the bumps smoothed out while you were at it"! Plus it was dangerous apparently for cars coming up behind me, again my reply was "there wont be any cars coming up behind, my car is the fastest here by a mile"!

So a total waste of £140, plus other expenses, I'm going to send the organisers a stinky letter. Properly peed off about it.

Not cool.

Has it scraped on any of the other tracks you've been on?

Yes, everywhere I've been with it in its current titanium guise. Oulton Park, Knockhill, Snetterton, Brands Hatch previously, Cadwell Park. The marshalls at Cadwell thought it was an excellent sight in fact!

Seems like you found some people who don't like the Supra. Clearly their argument is flawed.

Maybe you were just too fast and showing everyone else up ;)

I didn't really get the chance unfortunately, did about 8 laps in total and most of that was just getting into the groove.

Do you not get any kind of refund if it's been allowed before but all of a sudden they black flag you and tell you to leave?

Seems a bit unfair that they hadn't commented before then this time they kick you out!

Thats what I'm going to do today, argue my point and see what happens.

Seems stupid.. I can understand the noise to a degree, but only if its making your eardrums bleed... how many racecars are actually silent!? Before long they will just have Prius' racing!

Problem is what happens about cars like TVRs etc they are loud from the factory yet they are still allowed on tracks.

I used to go to RAF marham the charity days there were great until the noise nazi's ruined it. The reason being that the residents on base were complaining about the noise of a few cars over 2 days being too loud.

No mention of the jets that take off from there then....

Yes some exhausts are silly loud and it is possible to have a quite exhaust and monster power (like Pauls supra) but some noise limits are just crazy. Just because all these people move near a race circuit thats been there a very long time and decide they dont like the noise. Castle Combe is a prime example for that.

if you dont like the noise dont move near a track/airbase/airport etc.

I'd send Brands hatch a bill for adding a titanium finish to certain parts of their poxy track!

Which part of the exhaust is actually rubbing Paul, aren't you running a side exit system?

Surely it gets on your goat a bit that your titanium pipes are being ground away!

I know I'd be sick!

Most serious single seaters are so low they have titanium skid blocks fixed to the underside to save damage to the carbon floors, but that's a design feature :) I guess they think the exhaust being grounded all the time is not a design feature. Can't you remount it properly so it isn't able to ground? PITA these bumps, don't go to Combe ;)

Idiots, sensible thing would have to let you carry on but asked you to increase the ground clearance before you return.

My ARC Ti exhaust cracked from grounding as the piping used was thin, so probably a good idea to get it raised anyway.

Actually when they radioed into the control tower he did say I had a titanium skid plate instead of the exhaust rubbing, they came back saying thats not allowed. Its going back to the company that made it to be a. repaired as its worn out and b. to be mounted higher up.

Therefore it could just be that the company that made/fitted the exhaust didn't do a good enough job. It's not Brands fault. No one else was scraping the tarmac were they?

Do you work for Brands Hatch?! You often see race cars bottoming out on the track, its not uncommon.

How ridiculous is that, sure Tornados twin RB199s on reheat kick out a bit more than 90db lol

Couldnt you have asked the head marshall or race control for a bit of leniancy Paul?

Yes but they have a flat undertray or skid bar thing for that very purpose. An exhaust or its bracket might start making gouges. Plus, you yourself said it was fitted too low and was getting damaged. Public roads are a lot more bumpy than Brands Hatch and I don't imagined you endeared yourself to them when you had a go about bumps. All the real racing drivers seem to get on ok with that track.

90db is a bit low for a race track, but I reckon this is the way things are going. Croft, up here, has an active noise monitoring system now and they pull off cars that exceed their limit. Its the downside of tracks opening up more days each year to track days than they used to, and what neaby residents were used to.

edit to add, I recall the errant Mr Justin Foden losing his offside front wheel coming down out of Druids and his brake disc carving a nice line through the tarmac. That was after some other jeb-end had already spun off and smashed up the barriers in an MR2, they weren't a happy bunch that day either.
