Homer
Dude/Lee, do these need replacing when swapping the flywheel? The manual says they do but most mechanics I mentioned this swap to says it it's necesary.

It's only a small roller bearing, and on some cars it's probably done in excess of 100k miles. For the sake of a couple of quid, I would change it. hodge
Thanks guys. Much appreciated. Would this cause transmission rattling/vibrationwhen the clutch is depressed if there wasn't 1 fitted.

TLicense
It can cause the end of the input shaft of the gearbox to wander a little, and put side loads onto the input shaft bearings. Ryan had a lot of problems with the input shaft on his gearbox having a side load due to the pilot bearing being off-centre by 0.5mm due to some dodgy gearbox adaptor plates on his V8 project. It soon knackered the box up. When he got it so it was fully concentric, everything was sorted. For sake of £20 that I think the bearing is, I would pop one in. hodge
Could this cause a rear crank seal to fail.
TLicense
Nah, not a chance. The only way that could fail due to anything on that end is if the bearing is fitted, and it is being massively pre-loaded by the gearbox, but it would knacker the bearing waaaaaayyyyy before the crank seal ever went. The crank is just far too big for any of that to realistically happen. Edited June 9, 2011 by TLicense (see edit history)

hodge
All ordered. Only £10.03 I bet it's going to be a right laugh taking the box out on my back on the garage floor, then bench pressing it back in again lol.
