Crank pulley alignment.

Yeah before I pulled the tensioner I marked the belt with tipex. I'm going to try a few things in the morning, I'll try and make sure cyl 1 is at tdc but I'm almost positive it is as if it wasn't it would have to be 180degrees out (i think) and it wouldn't start. It seems to run ok at a certain rpm but then really misfire and spit out black soot when you rev it, on idle it's off a cylinder and slowly begins to slow and miss till i have to catch it with the throttle. I reckon it must be ignition, maybe coilpacks or igniter.

Too late now but just for clarification..... did you check the timing before you pulled the belt? It's always recommended to zero the pulley and the cams before starting, in fact it says in the manual to mark the belt up with tippex at this stage if you are putting it back on.

If you aren't sure if it's a timing issue or not, just tape up a long screwdriver and put it in the no.1 spark plug hole. Rotate the engine with the plugs removed and make sure that at zero the screwdriver is at it's uppermost point. This is of course if you don't have access to a clock. It's not going to be an exact science but it should let you judge it a bit at least.

Definitely shouldn't be the timing then. Even if something had been mixed up somehow the tipex would guarantee the correct alignment.

Sounds more along the lines of the ignition components. Most likely the coilpack clips or something in that area.

yeah that's what I've had it set to since rebuilding the head. It's now not starting at all so i think the plugs are fouled. going to clean them tomorrow and then try and get it running as crap as it was yesterday before trying to fault find. I bloody knew starting my thread on its first start was a mistake, i jinxed it.
