London to Brighton - Sponsorship!

Dear friends, club members and Jazz1,

In 2 weeks time I am cycling from London to Brighton to raise money for the British Heart Foundation! This is going to be my first big charity event and I have no idea what to expect apart from me falling over and collapsing! :D

Although I sometimes cycle to work (8 miles), this journey is 56 miles and by the looks of it shall entail some ups and downs (and I am seriously not looking forward to the ups!), but I need to stay strong and complete this ride in one go!

Anyway I am hoping to raise a little money for this event, I don't expect to make a huge amount but thought I'd do a small collection amongst friends and hope some of the Supra community. My work is offering to pay £200 if I manage to complete the ride (they have a feeling I won't!), so I am hoping I could at least raise the same on my own. I am cycling with 3 other colleagues including my boss so hopefully won't be too bad!

If you could spare 50p, £1, £5 or what you can I would be very grateful. It is for a good cause :)

You can make a donation following the link below (Please donate to the Abdin Ahmed page)

Thank you again :)

I'd get yourself out on a Sunday and get some more miles in. Get your booty used to being in the saddle longer, then it won't be so much of a shock riding a longer distance.
You sound like a man who has some scars!

I did a 15 mile non stop trip a few weeks ago & for the past week having been cycling into work which is roughly a 16 mile trip each day. This weekend I'll be meeting with my colleagues for hopefully a 25 mile practise! My biggest worry though Rob is the hills! I took a slight detour on the route home to do some hill routes & my thighs were burning!

You know about "the beacon" yeah?

I heard about it Rob & not looking forward to it, gonna see if I can do it without getting off my bike :(

I have only driven up it, so how anyone can get up there on a bike completely beats me, so my advice would be; get some good uphill only training in, as well as getting used to the saddle, etc.

I'd like to have a go at the bike ride though, and considering I lived so close to the beacon years ago, I'm surprised I haven't attempted the whole thing yet.

I'll chip in. :)

Ditchling Beacon is ridable, when I was young and fit I could weave up it and go over the top without stopping for breath, you just have to be in the right frame of mind. That's what cycling is about (once you reach a certain physical level), it's all psychological. The difficulty on the L2B is that the road is full of people pushing their bikes up, and rather than stick to one side to allow the riders a chance, they just wander all oer the place making a difficult climb even more so.

The halfway point at Turners Hill is also a bit of a climb too, but you can stop there as its a nice green for a halfway snack.

I've done the ride a few tiimes, some for fun with a works team and some serious. Best I ever did was 4 hours, but you have to start early for that and get ahead of the crowd, and then you're into "road club" territory and they're all miserable, sharp faced blokes whose idea of a good time is lactic acid burn and bum ulcers.

Good luck with the ride dude. My girlfriend and I completed the Round the Harbours 35 mile bike ride for BHF last Sunday, and putting in the practice definitely helps - I'd say it was more about getting your arse used to being on the saddle for hours on end more than anything! :D

Good luck, mate. I will donate a small token of encouragement :)

A small token? Andrew, I think you get paid too much! :p

Thank you so much, appreciate it! :)

Thanks for advice Andrew, been doing some hill training and they are just killer exercises! :(

Thanks Rob, was good fun reading that

I hoping just to complete it this time round, if all goes well I might try beating my set record.

My bum has seen plenty of action recently.... on the saddle that is! :D

The first few days were killer, my wife eased my pain by smacking me on my bottom... no it doesn't help!

Haha I don't get paid too much.. but I don't pay much tax either ;) Off-shore banking + non-dom = win :D

But seriously, it is for a good cause so I don't mind shelling out a bit.
