Kirk
Ive had my bilsteins with matching springs on the car now the best part of 12 months now and one thing i noticed when i changed the rears was there was very little pre load on the spring perch when the car is off the ground, you could actually move the spring by hand. Before people ask if ive fitted it correctly the answer is yes Now when the weight comes off the rear when going over a bit of a bumpy road at speed the back end feels a little light feeling and unsettled until it levels out again. Its not a major issue and doesnt cause severe traction loss or anything like that but could this problem be down to the lack of pre load when the suspension is at full stretch? bignum
Are the springs lowering jobbies and stiffer? if so thats the problem, well its not really a problem just the springs moving slightly when theres no weight on the car, i think thats what "helper" springs are designed for on some aftermarket coilover kits, andys scooby had them iirc. Kirk
There not lowering springs although arguably they are probably stiffer infact there actualy bilstein springs aswell. Not to sure helper springs will work on full size springs, thought they were more for the likes of competition type springs? To be honest the perch could do with moving up a few mm's just to give it that extra bit it needs to load the springs a bit and it will probably be ok but im just wondering whether under full extention the springs are actually causing the problem with the rear. Kirk
Thought just as much. Ill have to look into modifying the setup as its pretty good with the exception of that. Cheers Si
Ark
Hi Martin, If you're bouncing the back end high enough for the spring to un-load, you're effectively bouncing the wheel off the ground anyway because you've run out of suspension travel...raising the spring seat may keep the spring under compression, but you'll have the same problem because the wheel can't droop any further. Kirk
See i suspected that also but i can jack the car up with the weight just off the wheels and quite easily turn the spring which is why i suspect its that that is causing the rear end shuffling. Like i said its only minor but i can feel it when on the bumpy country back roads.
