dwayne
does anyone with knoweledge of the oil channels etc know if this would be possible (i mean lying the engine on its side) and safe to do assuming the sump could be adapted? strange question i know but i'm exploring options for a project cheers
Chris Wilson
Almost impossible, even with a dry sump set up as it wouldn't scavenge either the head or the block properly. Look at Midget engines from the USA, they have got upright 4 cylinder in line engines to lay down FAIRLY close to horizontal. This Ed Pink Toyota 4 pot is about as close to horizontal as you will get without huge redevelopment. Even to achieve similar will cost a bomb. http://www.edpink.com/news/index.htm
dwayne
thanks for that chris, looks like i'm back to the drawing board or admitting defeat here

dwayne
lol, the engine at present lies on its side under the front seats so i'll have to drive around with my head sticking out the sunroof
Stephendjb
Couldn't you use a 911 or subaru engine?
dwayne
havent looked at the 911 but i did at the subaru. problem is it weighs roughly 1850kg as is so i think an impreza engine would be under too much strain all the time. i did look at the 1uz but it needs at least a 69-70cm square hole to go in and the only option was putting it way up front which i thought would throw the balance out too far and it would be horrible to drive daily

johnny g
What about the flat-6 Subaru, rather than the flat-4?
welshbuddy
whats the advantage of having an engine like the link you send chris, over a 2jZ?
dwayne
i guess the flat 6 is an option, cheers i put this thread in tech because i was asking about the supra engine at first although i think its probably going to stray from that now. its not a very exciting project really but i have an estima that i wanted to do up for a bit of fun. i had a 7 seater before with a cracked head and i spent around £700 on some decent quality parts to fix it. long story short, i sold that one and bought an 8 seater with a suspected head problem again and i am exploring options to replace it with a different engine completely so its a bit more exciting to drive. i had it in my head yesterday that i was going to fit a 2jzge with an option to turbo it later for some real fun but looks like thats out now. i could fit more or less anything into it but i dont want to fit it in the back because loosing a row of seats defeats the object of the people carrier and i'm worried that fitting it way up front will cause it to feel terrible on the road. i know its not the most aerodynamic thing anyway so top speeds wouldnt be great (not that you would want a high speed in a bus) but a decent 0-100 could be a laugh
