dr_jekyll
i have built my new engine and fitted it to the car. just wondering what the full first start procedure is as at the moment im getting no joy making it start. so far i have; filled with cheap mineral oil. conected everything up; cranked with fuel relay out put fuel realy in crainked again and nothin tyred adding more timeing but its still not evan trying to fire. i dont want to keep cranking as im woried of damaging my new rings and at 1 point of it cranking it let out the loudest backfire ive ever heard so im not happy at the moment. any tips from youi guys that have run new engines would be great . thanks
Chris Wilson
Kill the fuel, check for oil pressure, sparks at the right time, compression OK, cam timing OK. Once this is 100%, add fuel. Check injector dwell and go from there.
dr_jekyll
cheers, so all sorted. engine is running smoth and quiet. so far i have ; let it idle for 5 mins and run it at 2000rpm for 20 mins 3 times then let it idle to temp then ran it at 2500 rpm for 10 mins all seems good no leaks ect. so what do i do now . i cant drive the car because its not mapped yet and its on far bigger injectors and a different turbo with lower compression than the current map is for. will it be ok to now drop the oil and put the good stuff in and send it for mapping or is it not ready to be taken that hard yet? pedrosixfour
What plugs are in it Craig? According to the plug section in tech its recommended to map the engine on copper plugs of a suitable grade and gap. That way should something go wrong the plug gives up first and not your piston. JustGav
This may be of some interest to you.... http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm Now that is interesting, because I've heard this as well.... and tempted to research this option for my new smart engine when I finish it. TubbyTwo
Thats interesting reading. Makes sense as well actually. Rebuilt my last MR2 engine and after about 50 miles of gentle driving I got bored and went for it. then never really bothered after that. Engine was faultless pulled very very hard and never really used that much oil.

johnny g
Ryan had 1bar going through my fresh MR2 engine within 10 miles of driving The initial start of 2500rpm, temperature check, leakage check, etc, is good. Then after that, get it out and mapped! Low boost, then high boost.
dr_jekyll
so basicly , stick the good oil in , give it to ryan and let him thrash it on the dyno ... sounds good , my kind of method
