JustGav
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13598607 Japan pensioners volunteer to tackle nuclear crisis How many people would be prepared to do something like this, a crisis such as this really does bring out the humanity in people and gives hope for the species. caseys
Putting aside the wars with China, Russia, the US etc (and this sentence is in all honesty) they are the most hardworking, selfless and humble people I have ever had the graces to meet - maybe not some of the youth, but definitely those over 30.. I'd fully agree with that, the senior people I've met through work come across as absolute gentleman, firm yes, but they have such manners and principles. SteamAhead
Good for them and fully agree with what they say; "I am 72 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live," he says. "Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer." Let's hope the government take them seriously.

Spot on, my dealings have been the same too, a prime example to the rest of the world. For some reason reading that article makes me think of independence day & the pilots bit. The Japanese have an amazing sense of honour, something that sadly lacks in most western countries, for instance you can happily leave a laptop in a bar knowing full well it won't get pinched, it's also why the japanese imports don't have alarms fitted to them, car crime is something that just doesn't exist there. They would also never sit back and claim benefits as that is just not honourable. We could learn a lot from them
jonc
I have been lucky enough to spend a short time over there with work (Tokyo and Yokahama) and they are a very honourable nation who work very hard to achieve their goals. This kind of sums them up :notworthy:notworthy:notworthy
b_have
My wife is Japanese, just showed her the report and she just shrugged her shoulders saying "of course, that's what we do, it's the Samurai spirit". I've often thought about how Tokyo power company motivate their workers to continue day after day in the battle to maintain control over the devestated reactors, but they will continue until the job is done. Take a look at Sky channel 518 (NHK news) very humbling to see how they cope with this and the associated tragedies of the tsunami.

We could learn a lot from them Reminds me of walking through Roppongi, Tokyo at midnight, seeing cars parked with windows left open. The 'Salarymen' hitting the bars and clubs straight from work still in their suits with briefcases, having a great time. Lots of smiles and polite bowing and not fight anywhere. They don't seem to need police.
Chris Wilson
I think it's very sad, and very telling how the media have "forgotten" the Japanese, and the New Zealanders after their disasters, and moved on to the latest gossip about corruption in football (who cares, a game for the great unwashed anyway.... ) and photos of our PM "high fiving" with the USA president (God how that made me cringe), over here on an Irish vote winning mission and a hurried pat on the back for his "special relations" At least O'Bama's wife managed to keep her hands off the Queen's backside this time...... TubbyTwo
My wife is Japanese' date=' just showed her the report and she just shrugged her shoulders saying "of course, that's what we do, it's the Samurai spirit".[/quote'] Amazing people the Japanese, anywhere else there would have been riots and looting after the devestation. Its very humbling to see everyone pick themselves up and all work together to get the country back on its feet. They rest of the world should pay attention, we could learn a hell of a lot. kill1308
Very heartwarming indeed.... the current older generation are a dying breed... if this happened in another 40 or so years it wouldn't be the same story.

It would in Japan, everyone I have met from Japan (regardless of age) has such a high sense of honour, they are a spectacular nation and I wish we were more like them. TubbyTwo
Just one of the reasons I love Japan, very impressive people. Can you imagine if it happend in this country??? it would never recover, people either just couldnt be arsed to do anything or you would jsut get huge mobs looting and trashing stuff then loads of crime. caseys
The thread title makes me laugh, some people should look at themselves on here before making such judgement against others and beleiving the media........ Sorry Jazz, really don't understand that one? Gav was pointing out how thoughtful some of the Japanese are? We're not judging anyone here I believe, only many personally saying they set an example for them.
