I dont know why you guys laugh at all that stuff with IED's and stuff, obviously you havent been to afgan or iraq and had your mates head blown of in front of you. still cannot see the funny side of it no matter how I look at it. I suppose its just another Tv program for you to watch from your safe house in the UK

 

Quite a few of us have been to both those places... I've been to afghan 6 times.... Anyway, back on topic.. I'll be running 600ish bhp soon, and have a nosiy/agricultural 6spd - IRS been like that for the last 6 years. I see no reason to put a Kevlar jacket around it

Leave the I-raq stuff out of tech please.

 

As for the kevlar jacket around the transmission, I'm at a loss as to why you'd want it there. Gearbox blowups that launch shrapnel everywhere are rare to nonexistent, even in high powered drag cars performing harsh launches. You just get one component in the drive train snap and that's it. It's not like in the movies :)

 

The danger from the transmission is the propshaft breaking off the 'box and carving its way through the cabin and your legs, hence the high end drag cars (I think ones that run in the 8s or less? Dude would know better than I) having transmission tunnel hoops which deflect it. These are serious bits of metal, all your kevlar vest would do is mop up the blood on its way past your legs ;)

 

Also, the kevlar weave on a BPV or ASV is designed to stop sharp point penetration, I'd have thought they are less effective against high force lateral slicing.

Almost correct big fella and one of the few times I may know more than you about something !!!!! The problem with props is more them digging in the road and catapulting the car forward, if it snaps at the front there is very little energy in it to comr thru a floorpan, the reason for the ballistic blanket or as i use a scattershield is not to contain any gearbox parts but to trap the flywheel/clutch/converter if bolts snap. I think it was the dragon RX7 that lost a flywheel in 1st to 2nd change, it came thru the floor cut the steering wheel off and exited thru the roof and travelled several hundred yards, it also took the route out between the drivers legs but only grazed them, it took a couple of hours to dig the clutch parts out of the track, this is a RX& with hardly any torque changing into 2nd, so does a 1500kg 700hp 600ft lbs car that hooks up need a shield???? How much do you value your nuts and feet ???? he.res a pic of a bonnet after the flywheel came off.:innocent:

 

If the vest will stop say a grenade then it will be fine, a lot of the cars use a blanket inc top fuel on the blowers to protect the crowd and crew, only drawback of a blanket is they get very oily over time.

I had a prop shaft snap on me a few years ago in a wagon. the propshaft dropped, dug into the m1 and tarmac shot straight up through the gear gaiter and shot blasted the roof of the wagon. It all happened that fast. I ended up covered in dust and cr*p and was lucyk it didn't flip me over. The mechanic back at the workshop counlt believe it didn't flip the vehicle over. I said I was lucky. Was doing about 75mph when it happened.
