I'm just waiting to hear back from Lee about the Group Buy that may possibly be in place for these so we'll see what happens. I used the Service Manual guide (the one Nic posts up all the time) and got it done. It was harder than I expected it to be but only took an hour and a half or so. I know the red Toyota 4Life (or whatever it is) is recommended by Toyota but after a post by CW the other day, I'm not sure whether to save myself some money and just buy some other decent coolant for half the price instead. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I should hopefully receive and fit the new radiator tomorrow and the nearest Toyota dealer to me is a distance away compared to places that would sell other kinds of coolant. Not sure as to how much normal coolant is but there are plenty of places close to me that would sell it. Morpheus Posted June 6, 2011 Share Posted June 6, 2011 Thread opened! Use only Toyota's red stuff as your aluminium cylinder head could corrode with the wrong formulation. Also, the next buyer might be put off if you haven't used the proper fluids. I would be. You can tell an engine that's always had the right stuff in it as there's no ring of rust in the expansion tank. Ideally you'd use a proper racing coolant that won't boil if it isn't pressurised due to a leak and it won't allow hotspots to develop around the cylinders from being turned to steam inside the water jacket but it's about £50 if not more. All you need to know is the spec of toyota for life and buy a coolant with the same spec!! Have a read of this article its quite enlightening http://www.search-autoparts.com/searchautoparts/data/articlestandard//motorage/162005/156227/article.pdf Long and short you can use another coolant and it won't be disastrous you may need to change it more but I think with cars the ages of ours do we really need to worry about what happens in 10 or 20 years time when our rubber hoses and and radiators certainly won't last that long before our coolants are deposited on the road! I think if Halfords stuff is the same then it'd be cheaper for me to get that as I pass one my friend works at on the way home and the nearest Toyota to me is quite a way.
