Kopite
I don't honestly believe this is a good idea... For god sakes, the M25 can't handle the daily traffic, never mind the olympic traffic... or are they going to rebuild the M25...great we get stuck with a motorway that will be shut for 7 years..... Also, think about how two faced this really is... last week it was Live8, about helping out the impoverished countries, now we are going to spend MILLIONS on some silly sporting events trying to prove who is better.... where is the logic... And yeah, it might help the short term labour issues, but then we get left with HUGE stadiums which are no good whatsoever, as someone earlier said just look at the millenium dome... Just my 2p.... i'm just happy that we won something (and beat the french ) as long as it doesn't affect us northerners
Kopite
did anyone watch this on Sky Sports? i totally agreed with the journalist from the Express. he was sayin that we're gonna spend £1.5 billion (!) to host these games, and half the stadiums will be pulled down and the others downgraded. he also commented that a lot of stadiums outside london will lose their appeal (e.g. hockey in MK) as there's gonna be stadia in london that need to be used. a past athlete (dunno her name) was all for it, sayin how when kids who previously watched on TV with their mums askin why they couldn't go, well now they'll be able to go. the bloke from the Express pretty much said "don't be daft, a lot of tickets will be corporate and it would of been easier to take them to Paris to watch rather than tryin to get into london! CJ
But isn't that just typical of the British psyche? As a nation (in general terms) we would have prefered to have come a very close second than win Can you imagine if it had been the Americans or the Australians? They would have been well up for it! Guest Terry S
Was the Jurno a Northerner It will revamp a massively rundown part of London, the infrastructure of which will be there long after the games have finished. It will mean investment in many industries that most of us are involved with. It does need to be paid for and the Tax Payer will bear most of the cost, but it will generate a Massive amount of money for the Country as a whole. Look at Sydney, the Australians benefitted massively from hosting the olympics. And as for it being easier to travel to france rather than London, what a load of bollox. I use public transport into central London all the time and it really isn't that bad.

Im with Terry on this one, having a sports stadium in the major cities and getting the kids involved instead of drinking on the streets is a definate plus point. And then we have all the commercial gains such as increased tourism, nomadic construction contracts, advertising:D, redevelopment of run down areas and all the extra jobs before, during and after the olympics. My opinion is a tad biased as our company stands to make quite a bit from advertising related stuff but its just an example of how good this can be for so many different people at so many different angles. I am well chuffed :nana:

far
Apparantly people living within inner london are going to get taxed an extra 80p per week council tax and they are planning to sell scratchcards to fund the building projects - WTF ? - I am presuming this is lottery related.
