This does not appear to be a hoax.

Microsoft has confirmed rumours that Xbox 360 users who find their console to be is incompatible with a new Xbox disc format will be offered a replacement machine.

With current anti-piracy methods unsuccessful, the company has decided to go back to the drawing board and devise in a new disc format. Currently, 1.15GB of every DVD is dedicated to a DVD Video partition and DRM tech. Microsoft's new format, XGD3, adds roughly 1GB capacity to a DVD disc and ushers in a new method for tackling those pesky pirates.

A firmware update that enables the new discs will be available tomorrow. However, several users involved in the beta test in North America have been hit with errors. It seems in some cases, the firmware has been preventing systems from playing standard discs.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," Microsoft stated today.

The company can detect the issue over Xbox Live and are reaching out to impacted customers to offer a replacement console. According to his Twitter , one tester has been offered a replacement Xbox 360 and a year's subscription to Xbox Live.

By the time the firmware update rolls out tomorrow, these bugs should have been fixed. However, just in case, if you update and get stung with a "disc unreadable" or "disc unsupported" message, you're encouraged to contact Microsoft, so it can verify the problem and issue a replacement console if need be.

Makes me think though that the next gen console must be well over a year away if they're putting this effort in. Considering the Wii 2 will be previewed at E3 more than likely this year that is quite surprising.

After the original Wii release, I don't think Sony and M/S have been trying to compete with Nintendo on delivery dates in the same way they are with eachother. I doubt they regard the Wii 2 as significant competition in the "serious gamer" market space.

We got two free games, we two got free games, ner ner ner ner ner :p

I remember when the original xbox was reduced by £100 they offered anyone who had already baught it at the higher price 2 free games and a free controller.

They also managed to turn round my 360 with rrod in 7 days.

One thing I would say for Microsoft, is that their customer service in these matters is excellent.

When mine went it took 6 weeks, as is the case with many others.

Iirc didn't Microsoft say about a year ago that the xbox is only approx. half way through it's life?

Sometimes I think that's a double bluff.

Yes it's been the longest refresh period compared to PS1/PS2 and xbox>360 and GC>Wii

I think sometimes they're holding back until the next bump in display quality in people's homes, either when cinema-wide (21:9) or super-hi-def (4x the resolution iirc?).

Whilst it'd be nice to get better AA and further field of view on some games, as we're sort of fixed at a 16:9 1080 resolution currently I agree, there's not much point bringing out a new console - media format i.e. dvd/BR hasn't been superceeded, nor I doubt they'd quite go solely HDD/App-web-game-store type content delivery (shame really as that'd wipe out Game and the like on retail), so yes some ideas of their console life make sense.

I doubt anyone will be getting a better console than they have on this exchange program, i can imagine they have warehouses full of each model refurbs inc motherboard changes just with the newer DVD drive in it.

That's cool. I hope my Eggbox has a problem, a new XBOX slim for my noise box would be brilliant!

To actually correct myself Matt, it looks like people will....

The new firmware is designed to support a new, updated disc format for the 360, which reportedly adds up to 1GB of usable data to Xbox discs. Microsoft will be replacing the outdated consoles with new 250GB slim 360s, and users will also be given one free year of Xbox Live to make up for the inconvenience.

Maybe it's time to go buy me an old 2nd hand 360 and chance my luck... i've wanted a couple of games on the marketplace.
