Westy
I have spoken to a few members on here regarding the intake system on my VVTi TT Supra, and the conclusions drawn are that the HKS intake I currently have fitted has poor filtration capabilities and allows through alot of dirt. I have done a bit of searching online and found these: mkiv.com filtration test http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/index.html supraforums discussion on this topic http://www.supraforums.com.au/forum/under-bonnet/32725-best-vvti-intake-options.html From these it seems apparent that the Apexi is the best filter, but there isnt a VVTi option and to be honest there are not many options in relation to the VVTi which requires an MAF sensor in the piping! In the end the guy on supraforums went with the HKS also... but I wanted to ask if anyone has any better options!? Thanks in advance.
JamieS
I've got the standard air box in with a K&N panel filter. No plans to change it from that.

CanisLupus
Apparently Stock Air box with new OEM or aftermarket Filter Element is the way to go for BPU. ^^
DaveR
That's interesting reading on the mkiv.com test about how poorly the HKS SPF performed. Perhaps time for a change... I think the test does show that an aftermarket filter is better than the stock airbox that everyone seems to be raving about here - they look loads better, too. With a bit of work you can create an effective heat shroud around an aftermarket filter and duct it to both look AND perform better.
Guest anesn
i used Apexi when i was doing BPU, worked good.

Nic
Note. That MKIV comparison test is very very old and tested the original double layer HKS mushroom filter, the foam filter element was changed many years ago to 3 layer foam, the new filters are a bit better but I still wouldn't use one on my own car. The *best* air intake in terms of filtration/performance is the stock airbox with a stock or aftermarket paper filter. If you want to keep the cone filter then I would fit an Apexi or K&N. Westy
Thanks for the replies guys - seems like the stock box is the preferred option at the moment. I have also heard that Chris Wilson might do a replacement element for the HKS which performs to a higher standard, and I have e-mailed him a link to this thread. I did fancy switching to the Apexi Cone after seeing the results but the HKS hard pipes would need to stay in place for the MAF sensor fitting...problem being the amount of space that I have to try and squeeze it into as the HKS albeit wide isnt that big. I think I will need to take all the piping off and see how dirty they are inside before I make a decision, but in the meantime keep the opinions coming. Scott
Remember if you take the pipes off for a look you will immediately want to clean them. This will lead you to a fairly big job of removing all the turbo pipes etc. I know..... I did lol.
Westy
Lol...I will give them alil scrub i'm sure! Thanks for letting me know about the problems with the HKS Scott - hopefully come up with something better once I get a few ideas from people on here. Thanks for letting me know about the problems with the HKS Scott - hopefully come up with something better once I get a few ideas from people on here. No bother. It is a little daunting taking them all off but once you have done it a few times it's as easy as pie My choice would definitely be either Apexi or back to stock. If you can get an Apexi to fit then I would make a little shielding round about it, like a lot of members do, just to help a little with heat soak. Westy
Received a response from Chris Wilson this morning on this and he does do replacement filters for the HKS which are made by ITG and are regarded by him as having a far greater filtration capability. I'll get the pipes off first, but I'm sure I'll end up ordering one of the ITG filters as a first option.
