Arbedark
Not content with giving me brake woes last month my Supra has now developed an unusual noise that appears to be coming from the clutch. When idling in traffic I noticed a slight rattle noise that I hadn't heard before and when I engaged the clutch to move off the noise went. After engaging first and moving off I noticed that the car seems to be less smoothe than normal. I am unable to tell if the noise is occuring while in gear due to engine/road noise. I was wondering what people think this might be, and whether it is going to be an issue that needs fixing ASAP + costs. I have done a search on here and found a couple of clutch rattle threads, but none seem to fit my circumstances. Thanks for the help all. Guest Budz86
What clutch/flywheel setup do you have? What spec is the car? Milage since clutch was changed? Just a few questions to kick things off...
Guest anesn
Most aftermarket clutches makes rattling sounds, aswell mine done it since it was new
Nic
As said, do you know what clutch/flywheel is fitted? If it has the stock dual-mass flywheel fitted and has just started to rattle then it'll be a bearing that has gone. If you have an aftermarket solid flywheel fitted, a rattle sound when the car is idling out of gear is normal, the rattle should go when the clutch pedal is pressed. Raising the idle speed slightly will help reduce the rattle. Most aftermarket clutches makes rattling sounds, aswell mine done it since it was new The rattle is caused by the undampened solid flywheels - included with some aftermarket clutches - transferring vibration/noise from the gearbox. Arbedark
Sorry guys, I should have stated in the OP. Its completely stock. The rattle isn't particularly loud, I don't notice that it's there, only when it isn't, if that makes sense. By pressing the clutch pedal down there is a lessening of noise and when engaging the clutch there is a slight increase in noise. Hope that helps identify the problem, although I know that without actually being there in person it'll be difficult. Edit: The car's done about 45000 miles, unknown when the clutch was last changed, I got it from Jurgen over 6 months ago with no history from Japan. Jurgen-Jm-Imports
might be your release bearing mate on its way out.. am sure you have a stock clutch.. but this noise can go on for years and years too.. if you need it changed or want to do it we can offer full garage services also. cheers
bobapple
Did it stop when you pushed the clutch in ? if so I would agree with Jurgen on the release bearings as mine did this before my rebuild. Mine first started, when I started it up heard the rattle sounded roughly gearbox area stopped when clutch was pressed.
