I need it for the insurance I think you can only get it when the alarm is fitted, AFAIK it's not the alarm that's certified, but the installation. lovatt
if the alarm is thatcham approved you can take it to any approved alarm place and they will check that everything is correctly fitted and can issue a certificate, usually around £40. but they will try to sell you a new system, just tell them you aint got the money for one. Matt Harwood
There are two types of approval that insurance companies can ask for. Proof of a Thatcham approved security system and quality of installation. Any company that's either VSIB, (Vehicle Security Installation Board), approved or MESF, (Mobile Electronics & Security Federation), approved will issue a single certificate with both the alarms details and their own approval details. Any approved company can do an 'Inspection' and issue a certificate of compliance once they've checked that the system IS a Thatcham approved product, that it operates correctly and that it's fitted to at least a reasonable standard. We only charge £25 + vat to do this, it usually takes about 1/2 an hour to an hour at most. I'd do it for you for nothing but coming from Dudly to Maidstone would probably cost you more than you could save!
