dandan
While my car is off the road having the wheels, suspension and brakes changed I have decided to do some work on the underbody. I am not dropping the subframes yet (that'll be a winter job) but I'd like to give the arches and sill areas a bit of a tidy up and coat of paint. What is the best thing to use? Ideally I need to be able to buy it locally from somewhere like Halfords. Any ideas? Cheers Dan

dandan
Hammerite? Trouble is there's a lot of choice and I don't know which is best (longest lasting, toughest and least water ingress) Stonechip http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_188459_langId_-1_categoryId_165594 Black Waxoyl http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_172631_langId_-1_categoryId_165594 Underseal http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_179695_langId_-1_categoryId_165594

Rob_Mitchell
clean up the area's and mask off to advoid getting on bodywork... i would recommend using a black stone chip to tidy things up.. i hate wax oil makes a right mess and gets everywhere when working on the car at later stages
Jimmy James
I used to build lowriders in Canada and we used a aerosol product on the frames which is black rubberised made by "dominion sureseal" a division of meguires. Excellent product, not sure it's available here..
Kirk
When doing the underside of the floor and arches id use U-POL raptor, IMO the best under seal on the market. On the likes of suspension arms, subframes and inside box sections defiantly use clear wax oyl spray as it looks so much better appearance and protection wise. dandan
Cheers guys - I had a nose around for your recommendations and could only find the U-POl stuff. Is this it? http://www.qpaints.co.uk/u-pol-raptor-liner-black-tintable-4l.html
jonc
A lot of the classic car guys sware by this stuff for cavities and underbody http://www.dinitrol.co.uk/rust_prevention_waxes_and_oils.aspx
turnerjr
3M do the best underseal in my opinion, sticks to pretty much anything and leaves a rubbery like texture when dry. Bit pricey though at £8 a tin, but you need a spray gun to apply it
Iky
Clean any rust back to bare metal 1) Apply Bilt Hamber Electrox primer 2) Replace any knackered seam sealer in the seams 3) Apply 3M Stone chip 4) Use Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 cavity protection in box sections, chassis rails etc. Bilt Hamber stuff works, Ive used their Deox gel rust remover and its bloody fantastic. Waxoil is useless compared to this dynax stuff. Edit - the Dinitrol stuff is supposed to be pretty good as well, depends what you can get hold of i suppose.
