Right, I have wanted to own a Supra for as long as I care to remember but everytime I've come close to it I've decided I'm not ready financially! Well, I'm at that point now where it's more viable and I just have to do it! It's an itch that needs to be scratched.

I'm going to Devon on Saturday to look at a late 97 TT VVTi tiptronic and if it's as good as it looks, I'll be buying it. :) My only gripe is it's totally stock. Although it's cheaper to buy a ready modded car, it's also nice to have a blank canvas as there are quite a few Supras around that are really not to my taste!

1st question is what is needed to get the car to BPU stage and roughly how much does it cost? Secondly, I've heard there are issues with lowering some later Supras?? What are these and how do I know if my car will have these issues??

Thanks in advance.

Simon.

The suspension shouldn't be an issue. All I can think of is some cars (very rare) came with REAS suspension, but you'd still be able to replace them with coil overs. Not that you'd want to...

check for light vibration at idle as these facelifts can suffer from worn engine mounts.....not a massive thing but just something to know.

Where in Hants are you?

Nice one! Thats a helpful tip to know. Any other pointers?

I'm in Waterlooville, just north of Portsmouth.

By any chance, is this in quicksilver, and located in Buckfastleigh?

I work just up the road in Petersfield, I could give you a mini tour of mine with things to look for if you like? may be Morrisons?

I recommend you see how you like the car in stock form before going down any modification routes.

Once you had a feel, then you could work your way to BPU.

What he said.

If you want to see just how awsome a stock Supra can look, then look at the red one on the Dragonball pics. And if you want to see how BAD some ppl can get styling, look at how i bought mine in my Garage haha.

Removing the top speed delimiter on VVTi Tiptronics without affecting gear change operation is problematic. Lowering a MKIV very much at all totally screws up the kinematics of the suspension and it will handle like a dog without major and very costly suspension mods. REAS suspension is prone to knocks and leaks, I have three dead sets knocking about. Repair is eye wateringly expensive, most opt to fit stock type suspension. REAS dampers are red in colour with pipes going to them

So is it a case of it being impossible to remove the limiter or is it just more difficult than a non Tiptronic car??

There's lots of discussion in this thread about the limiter issue on the VVTi tips, the last page of posts explain the issue in more detail. Nod provided a possible solution but there were no further replies: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?155415

There was another thread in tech somewhere where I think someone had figured out how to crack it, but cannot find the thread now...

I have never had a late VVTi Tiptronic with an attempt at a top speed delimitation that has worked totally correctly through here, to be frank. Not to say it hasn't been cracked, just that I have never seen one, and not a month goes by without a question asked of me about the way of achieving this.

I've just read that entire thread and it really does seem like there is NO way of doing this! It seems crazy to me! Such an awesome car let down on such a small detail! I know it is a small detail among all the plus's but as I said to Jonc earlier, I do the very occasional airfield day with a 1.5 mile straight and that would get very boring very quickly having far lesser cars breeze past me whilst I'm bouncing along on the 112mph limiter!
