ManwithSupra
What happens if there's a serious problem early on? My neighbours dog developed a heart condition that required them taking it to Liverpool for specialist surgery. The bill came to over £10k! They'd only had the dog for circa 6 months! It's just not worth the risk IMO. From what i understand most policies dont cover anything close to £10k so they would have been screwed either way. I love animals but if the vet told me £10k then it would leave me no option but to have the animal put to sleep. Either way Vets charge way too much... it should be regulated
tbourner
How do you get referred to a uni by your vet? Do you just ask them to do it? What kind of prices are we looking at for Uni ops?
Chris Wilson
Liverpool are pretty expensive unless you have an "interesting" case, where they will sometimes work for nothing for the experience. We had a Rhea autopsied FOC as they were interested in ratites. I think you can be referred or go direct. Obviously scans and complicated exploratory stuff is dear wherever you go. MRI and CAT scanners don't come cheap, and sup electricity.
Paul
Pet Plan here too, we thought about not bothering this time as we could (and would) cover pretty much anything from savings etc. but decided on paying out a monthly premium instead. These days vets charges are sky high as they know most people cover their pets with insurance, got to say that Pet Plan are fairly decent if you need to claim although we didn't get a payout when our dog was younger and had two 'retained' canine teeth removed, despite the vet supporting us Pet Plan said it was a cosmetic operation !?! Paul
Pet plan paid out in full I wouldn't pay £10k out of my own pocket on my dog, though I'd always feel bad that it came down to money Although I've got pet insurance I would sell the Supra if I needed to if my dog needed that sort of cash spent on him, wouldn't keep him alive for the sake of it but as long as he has quality of life then money would be no object. I see it as my responsibilty and duty to repay the loyalty he shows me every minute of the day by making sure he gets every chance for a full and healthy life. I can understand other peoples views on this though, maybe I'm just soppy?

However, I'm at the age (28) where I'm more than likely going to be trying for kids within the next 5 years or so. £10k helps a lot when you have kids However, go with Petplan and you'll never have to make that choice
keener
We have cat and dog on PetPlan. A bit more expensive than others but - and here's the thing worth checking with any policy - they pay out for the life of the pet if long term illnesses are diagnosed. A lot we looked at only cover long term illnesses for the first year. If it needs a lifetime of drugs or treatments that could get expensive. They also settle claims very promptly. I was sceptical at first but our vet insures his dogs with PetPlan and my other half had very good service from them before so we went for it and I have no regrets - especially as the cat has been diagnosed with cancer. :-(

No problems so far, only thing they wouldnt pay out for was a retained testicle operation saying that its wasnt essential as it wasnt life threatening.
