Best Pet Insurance?

Im with petplan for my Black Lab nightmare, costs a bit more than most per month BUT they settle any claim with the vet rather than most having to pay of your own pocket then claim back.

Came in very handy when the cat was attacked and the result was over £2k in vets bills.

They certainly know how to charge.

Petplan are pretty good when it comes to a big pay out. To be honest, we don't insure our dogs, I have had the odd big bills (900 and 400 quid in the last 8 years) but would have spent more than that if I had covered them with honest declarations made. With juts one dog it may be the maths will be in favour of insurance. The basic policies are pretty naff, better to go for a more expensive and wide coverage plan, IMO.

I'm with M&S pet insurance, was told they were one of the best, as a high level of cover, plus if on going treatment, no max limit ! pay around £15 a month , with an excess of £70 if the bill is over a certain limit, from what i can remember !

Insurance company ask's you whether to pay yourself or pay the vets direct, used it a month a two ago when poor Dave got knocked down by a car, very fast to settle bill aswell !

I pay £35 a month for Petplans top cover. My dog is a pedigree whippet, and so far I must have claimed circa £5k for various injuries, so well worth while :D

My excess is £75 per claim. My vets policy makes me pay upfront, but pet plan pay up promptly, so it's not too bad. He's also covered for ANY illness or ailment he may get during his life.

BTW, pet insurance isn't something you should skimp on.

A couple of years ago, One of my Whippets broke his leg in the park. He wasn't insured, as I'd only had him a few weeks and was deciding which policy to go with.

Anyways, he ended up dying as a result of the anaesthetic after the operation on his leg.

I was devastated about the dog, and left with a £1200 bill to add insult to injury :(

Just put the money you would have spent on insurance in a savings account, you'll be better off.

This is what the breeder told us....

£20 a month

£240 a year

in 5 years this is only just over a grand though........

Depends if you are lucky or in the above case, very unlucky.

What happens if there's a serious problem early on? My neighbours dog developed a heart condition that required them taking it to Liverpool for specialist surgery. The bill came to over £10k! They'd only had the dog for circa 6 months!

It's just not worth the risk IMO.

That should read 'you could be better off'. We pay probably 60/month for our GSD because of an ongoing condition. Without cover she would have cost us thousands. Originally we were paying about 10/month and the treatment was 60/month so its taken about 6 years before the treatment=insurance cost. There were also other issues that they paid out for. Without the support of insurance we would have been faced with some very difficult decisions - my dogs are like children to us and although its easy to say we'd pay anything sometimes its not possible.

Avoid Direct Line like the plauge!!

When my Rotti was diagnosed with cancer last year, they tried to imply that I knew he had it and did nothing about it.....the foolish person on the phone tried telling me this about 2 days after he was put to sleep...........lets just say they were told where to go!!!!

I'm just insuring to other Rotti at the minute and will be going with Pet Plan.

We were with direct line for the GSD and dobbieX, they've been great for prob 6+ years. We've just got a monster of a rottie cross (45kgs at 12 months old and alreay taller than rottie limit) and after a lot of research have insured him with Tesco.

That is terrible. I wouldn't wish going to Liverpool on anyone.
