Had one for 3 years, ragged the ass off it from cold and it would return 35 mpg at pretty much full throttle everywhere. Nothing ever went wrong on it no matter how ruthless I was with it, very decent sized boot, comfy and fun to chuck around.

Cool, thanks :). I was also going to have a look at a Yaris from around 2000.

dont be tight, put the fuel in the supra, thats what its for josh...

But it's only done just less than 80,000 miles and I don't want to use it to drive 10 miles to and from work each day as it doesn't get a chance to warm up properly. I also have to either park on the car park at work next to people who don't care about their cars or on the road (it's a business park so the "road" is very quiet) which I don't like doing.

Also my girlfriend lives in a house that doesn't have a drive so I have to get her to pick me up when we stop at hers or I have to get a bus as I won't leave it on the road due to her Mum's car being broken into, a neighbour's car being stolen and my gf, her Mum and her Stepdad all having their cars crashed into whilst parked there.

my uncle had one of these and it seemed to be a great little car, never let him down, although they are not the best looking car in the world

Yeah, my mate's Mum has one and has had it from new and it's never gone wrong.

What's the story on 46 mpg? I tried searching, but searching through seven thousand posts would take all week!

I filled my car up at Hopwood Services and then drove to the Shell garage by Southampton ferry port and filled it up again. It cost me £20 (at £1.45 a litre) to fill up to full again. I did 135 miles which worked out at 46mpg.

I know what happened. I didn't expect anyone to believe me. Maybe something blocked it and the tank was "full" when it wasn't after the 2nd fill.

Search "Hopwood" and you'll find my posts about it.

That's all I have to say on it.

:taped:

Sorry man, don't mean to snap or anything but that's what happened and I've just had the p!ss taken out of me for saying it. Maybe the tank was "full" when it actually wasn't so it only cost me £20. We'll never know.

I prefer the pre-9th gen Corolla to the Yaris.

The Yaris just feels so lacklustre in comparison, as well as being a whole lot less roomy inside. Sure it's probably safer, but safety isn't everything.

If your budget could stretch a little you could get the 1.6 G6R which was meant to be rather nippy and a lot of fun. I got quoted £550 fully comp on one aged 24 with 1 fault and 1 non-fault accident in last 5 years.

im rolling in a Saxo VTR - its nippy and amazing on fuel .... and the chavs "dig it" ;)

I couldn't have a Saxo due to the "chavness" of it :p

I think the insurance would be a bit much for me at 22 compared to an old Fiesta or something :D

I've got a 1999 1.25 Fiesta. It's a good car but not as frugal on fuel as I would have expected from the modest engine. It is very reliable, and parts are easy to come by. If fuel economy is important, maybe look into a Corsa of the same age. They made a 3 cylinder engine which might be economical.

Yaris has my vote all day, cheap and it doesn't die, my girlfriends one has taken abuse, she has target practice with bollards, the car exterior has bumps everywhere but after 140k miles on a 1 litre it's still drives tight as a drum, she's had it almost 3 years and all I ever did was once service it and new Tyres, nothing else.

To be honest I'm not all that worried about it being really economical, I just don't want to use the Supra as a daily driver and be limited to where I can take it and be worried about it all the time.

I think the first thing to do is to check insurance on all cars that I'd consider then choose between the lowest few.

Thanks chaps :)
