Josh
I'm fed up of using my Supra as a daily driver and obviously won't go shopping in it or leave it on the street so I'm having to use my girlfriend's Ka or make her drive everywhere (not that I mind her doing all the driving ). I don't want to put the miles up on the Supra and won't do short journeys in it as I like to warm it up properly. I have a budget of £1,000 but would like to spend a bit less as long as the car's reliable. It needs to have a small engine (1.4 petrol at most) to be worthwhile buying. Also the insurance needs to be extremely cheap so no Saxos or anything. I was thinking maybe an old-shape Corsa, 106 or Polo, something like that. So what's a good cheap car to drive that would be reliable and good on fuel? Any help would be appreciated.

supramkivcork
I bought a 1998 1.6 primera a few months ago for 400 euro. Has 180,000 miles on the clock. Not an ounce wrong with it to be fair. It's great to be able to drive around without the worry of someone banging a car door or something down the shops lol . Tax is cheap, 125 for 3 months rather than 365 for same time period on the Supra. Supra going back on the road from June til August so I think I'll enjoy it that much more with some good weather hopefully
Ricky49
Something small maybe diesel or a small litre petrol something like a Corsa, Fiesta, Fiat 500 or a girly Ka.

Stephen G
i just got a 98 peugoet 106 1.5 diesel for a couple hundred pounds, needed a little bit of tidying up but had a set of fancy tail lights, jvc dvd head unit and 15" oz alloys, which i have removed from the car to sell on, should leave the car costing next to nothing:D
scotty71
So what's a good cheap car to drive that would be reliable and good on fuel? Any help would be appreciated. A red Supra TT6 - apparently they do 46 mpg which is better than any corsa, 106 or polo

Alternatively a pre 2000 Nissan primera GT would be fun and cheap. a little civic 3dr with the 1.5 engine? I could go on for ages

TubbyTwo
My last cheap runabout was a 1998 passat TDi. 110hp picked it up for £1k. never ever went wrong in over 2 years of owning it. frequently returned over 550 miles to a tank around town and most ever from 1 tank on a decent motorway run was pretty much 640 miles. plus it was nice and comfy to waft around it, and great for travelling around the UK picking up MR2 turbo engines, parts and wheels lol. this was mine:
Josh
Have you got a multi-car insurance policy? Yeah, I'm with Admiral Multicar which has my Mum's A3, my Brother's Corsa and my Supra on it. Admiral don't ask about crashes over 3 years old either so I'm looking at paying about £4-500 for insurance. TubbyTwo, something like that would be all right, I liked my Golf diesel before but I would like a small hatchback as they're fun to drive. Thanks so far guys

Josh
Pug 205 GTi? Wouldn't the "GTi" bit make the insurance higher? I'm just looking for someone small, good on fuel, cheap on insurance (for me at 22) and fun(ish) to drive. I'll check insurance on one tonight and let you know, thanks

I ultimately want a car that I don't care too much about so I don't worry about leaving it anywhere and if it gets dinged in a car park, I can just "ding" the car back
Matt H
Ummm, a 98 onwards 1.2 clio would be good if you can get a decent one as the MPG is pretty decent. You'll defo get a diesel escort in that budget, which could return 45mpg average if it's been looked after?

I had a 1.2 Clio as my first car and missed the feel of driving it and the handling when I got the Golf so I wouldn't mind having one again. It was very economical as well even though I put my foot down quite a lot
Arbedark
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2710149.htm Had one for 3 years, ragged the ass off it from cold and it would return 35 mpg at pretty much full throttle everywhere. Nothing ever went wrong on it no matter how ruthless I was with it, very decent sized boot, comfy and fun to chuck around.
