I spent the weekend at Donington watching a friend drive his Lola F3000 with an F1 3.5 engine in it run in the BOSS series for Indy cars, ex F1 cars, F3000 and other such exotica.

Klaas Zwart won as usual, having as much seat time in his 4 litre Benetton B 197's on his own private circuit tells in his immense speed and confidence in the cars, awesome to watch his totally committed out laps!! He didn't set the fastest lap though, the outright lap record has now been broken by Marijyn Van Kalmthout in the first of the two races, with a stunning 57.221 second lap, in his Benetton B 197 running a 4 litre Judd V10 engine, see http://www.tsl-timing.com/eerc/2011/111863.pdf

My photos of the day are at http://www.newbury-house.com/donington_britcar/boss.html

I particularly likes the stunningly turned out Ex De Cesaris Jordan in period livery, and the totally immaculate Panoz DP01 Indy Champ Car that was driven brilliantly by the Dutchman Henk de Boer. The thing had IMMENSE grunt, and for a big relative barge suited Donington where it could utilize its vast downforce down the Craner Curves, and it's grunt up the Wheatcroft Straight.

But my hat went off to my friend Chris Woodhouse who, despite only hearing of the event last Tuesday, running ancient tyres, and with a couple of worrying glitches that would sap the enthusiasm of many, came through to finish well in class in the second race. All run on a budget that probably wouldn't even pay for a weekend's tyres for the more exotically equipped teams. He hadn't even driven the Lola for many many months until tipping up at Donington. Great show.

My mate Ric Wood decided his 7 litre V8 star car wasn't fast enough on the Saturday, so went home to fetch his DTM Astra, a fabulous £150K worth of German technology. Now THIS is what you call a front anti roll bar, and yes, it does twist, and yes, you can feel the adjustments when the link positions are changed. A proper race Supra would probably need something bigger still.
