jast
Im only doing short journeys (approx 5 mins) on a daily basis to work. Will this take its toll on the car??? Stupid Question I know!!!! I am however letting it warm up before driving, and going the longer way round if you know what I mean, but still will this cause serious problems in the near future??? JamesG
I've done short (1 mile) daily journeys for the last six months and the car has been fine. I don't accelerate hard during the journey though as it isn't enough time to be properly warmed up. There may be longer-term consequences, but I expect they will be limited to me getting fat as I'm a lazy git and should walk into work James. Digsy
I wouldn't be overly concerned. Engines are tested to simulate nearly all (reasonable) types of use these days, and as far back as the Supra engine. Plus you are warming it up beforehand. AJI
I agree with Darren, you are warming up before setting off which is the most important thing. Also try not use all electrical things at one time on short journeys, ie. heated seats, heated back window/mirrors, air con etc. As the battery will take a beating as with short journeys, the alternator doesn't have much time for re-charging duties. Alex
Just got one point to make. USE A FCUKING PUSH BIKE, YOU LAZY TOAD!!!! 5mins/1 mile you two should be ashamed!!! you could at leat take a de-tour to the closest motorway and drive up and down it for a couple of junctions! chrispazzi
The engine will wear out in less miles, as an inordinate percentage of engine wear is in the first few seconds/minutes after each cold/dry start. Proper warming up, avoiding putting loads through the engine on cold oil, and more frequent engine oil changes are all you can do to minimise this. You'll also get through your battery in fewer miles. I would be more concerned about your future private health treatment costs after you get a heart attack from lack of activity. michael
One thing you might find is a nervous moment of panic when you top your oil up and find a "headgasket blown" coating of white gunk under the filler cap - short journeys tend to cause this.
