Conservation the glass is half full! (one for the animal lovers)

Though I would give the animal lovers here a little smile :) but first the story which led to today!

As some of you know I work at a local zoo to me, and have done for a little while now. And unfortunately although I love my job I did become a little despondent a few months back, due to the park moving away from conservation and seemed to be heading in the farm stock direction. This is by no means the area of careerer I want to pursue and started to get a little down regarding work.

After a while it built up inside and ended up in the office and decide to express all of my concerns, after a long meeting I got the go ahead to try and focus my attention on introducing a breeding program for a couple of our soft bills.

Need less to say I got to it, and after a refurbishment to the enclosure, change of diet, new nesting areas/materials and a few other alterations it was in the hands of the birds.

And much to my excitement went into the enclosure today and they have a chick!!

and here is the bird in question- Spreo Starlings! :)

no pics of chick as obviously its in the nest but when it fledges, assuming it survives I will update :)

I also turned my attention to breeding our Green Crested Touraco's to and a week ago they laid and egg, unfortunately they stopped sitting yesterday so I had to pull the egg and incubate it so I may be hand rearing it soon which isn't ideal but still great news.

we have also bred a few million duclings as always here is a pair named splidge and splodge  I'm not guilty of the name:p

and we have also bred are Bennets Wallabys and one of which we are also hand rearing due it mum rejecting it.

Hopefully I will be able to update with a few more, as our white cheeked touraco's, Siberian ground Thrushs, Red tailed laughing thrushs and a couple of others are building :)

need less to say i am chuffed to bits as I now feel as if I have managed to steer one area of the park away from farm life and more to conservation :)

Thanks for Reading

Must be a very rewarding job at times :)

yes it is very rewarding, very stressful at times too, but as soon as it comes to breeding season it becomes very rewarding when rare animals start to appear :)

Good work Jake.

Cheers Adam

congratulations, quite a stunning bird.

yeah they are stunning unfortunately you do not see that many of them any more in the uk, zoo's prefer the big animals. Shame really the birds tend to get over looked by allot of people.

What a job to have, I'm envious. :)

thanks man its a great field to work in, no rich quick unfortunately but great none the less.

Great story and I admire your work :) Ducklings and ducks in general rule! That wallaby is cute as well.

ducks are awesome i do tend to take them for granted though as we literally have tones :p

Refreshing in this day and age to see someone so passionate about how they pay the bills.

Well done fella.

thanks man to work in the area I do you have to be passionate otherwise you wouldnt do it, it can be hard at times but the passion is what keeps you going and eventually it pays off. :)

Awesome work. That must be very satisfying.

yeah it is very satisfying I love my work.

and I am very happy today as despite the very bad storm last night the chick survived :)

So do you volunteer there or are you a qualified keeper/on the pay role? Went to Monkey World last year, loved it, and an previous ex of mine's friends mum (tenuous link!) ran a small zoo, I fell in love with the Capybaras, sound just like guinea pigs!

Our Kookaburra pair have laid, and at least one has eaten their newly hatched chicks, for the last three seasons. It's a cruel world, the animal kingdom is not dissimilar to us humans. You are doing a great job though, frustrating and occasionally saddening as it may be, I am very envious. Stick with it, and good luck.

We have a hand reared Emu that is imprinted, it follows the wife and I like a puppy. Not sure what we will do with it, but it's far better than most X Factor contestants, talent wise, and if it disappointed you could always eat it and feel "green" with a virtually fat free home produced meat produce ;)
