MP4 movie file size reduction for You Tube upload?

Thanks to scotty71 I have a video sat on You Tube, but I really need to grasp this sort of stuff better myself. I have an in car Go Pro HD video camera I use for data logging and fun. If I record in HD for good quality saving to DVD for future reference the file sizes are massive, over 2 gigs for a 20 minute outing. If I want to upload to my web server , or to You Tube, or send them to a customer, is there an idiot proof guide, using free software that will run on a slow PC running XP, to reduce the file sizes significantly, but retain acceptable quality for the likes of You Tube or sending as a biggish attachment to an e-mail? I know I can set the camera to record in a poorer quality, but I really want the quality to be available when viewed off a DVD or the hard drive, yet be able to compress, maybe to a different format to MP4 altogether, for uploading and FTP'ing.

Many of these editing apps are full of settings that mean little if anything to me. I need something pretty fool proof :) Thanks. I also have a slow, in the sticks, connection to Broadband, that often drops the connection altogether. Has anyone had success with the YT option to upload over 2 gig files, that has another associated widget to allow auto resume on dropped connections? It didn't work very well for me... Cheers.

Ive always used windows movie maker to edit and resize my vids, its very basic but easy to use and should do what you want, you may need to download it but if you`re runing windows service pack 2 you`ll allready have it, i dont know anything about the yt option thing, sorry.
