scooby_doo_do
looking at buying an old defender (1990-1995 ish) 90/110/200/300 or something like that to do a bit of off-roading in.. Not too sure on the differences of them all... just wondering what they are like on the m-way's though and if they do 70mph and feel stable enough?.. Thanks Craig. David P
At 70mph they are like sitting on a park bench bolted onto a running road menders compressor whilst being towed behind a bus.
Chris Wilson
Most people who own a Defender are sat in a garage waiting room, or are in it at the side of the road awaiting recovery

Swampy442
At 70mph they are like sitting on a park bench bolted onto a running road menders compressor whilst being towed behind a bus. I once drove one 200 miles, that aint too far from the truth Something fun, bit of off roading, a quad?
Chris Wilson
A Unimog takes some beating off road.

stevie_b
+1 for Discovery. Tdi or Td5 engine (Tdi for ease of DIY engine maintenance, or so I'm led to believe)
leet45single
i was gonna post something like this because im after one aswell but just joined the landy forum. think im going to go for a 110 with the 300tdi engine after the advice. sorting the supra out first though at srd so in no rush but would be awsum if you go to look at any that are for sale on autotrader and discover there no good, that way may safe some traveling, if you like I'll do the same and pm you, if you havent already got one by the time im ready to get one. one tip though take a little hammer or screwdriver to have a poke around the body to make sure its in good nick and not covered up with filler. mainly look at the bulkhead. leet45single
200 tdi stong old engine easy to work on 300tdi bit more difficault to work on but still diy but more power than the 200tdi td5 very hard to work on yourself if anything goes wrong but more power than the 300tdi but it will be being newer. i wanted to get a v8 and run it on gass but they said na forget that get a 200/300tdi and run it on 30%veg oil (comments from the landy forum when I asked for aadvice on the engines)
leet45single
on and I askedthe same about speed on the road, they said the 300 and td5 will keep up fine on the dual/motorways and do about
Dnk
Classic Range Rover with a big petrol v8 in it is the only way to go fit a cage and a couple of comp seats and strip the rest out diesel is for farmers or truckers unless its something like the 6.2 GMC v8
heckler
on and I askedthe same about speed on the road, they said the 300 and td5 will keep up fine on the dual/motorways and do about 90 yup, the 110 TD5 I use does 90 ... towing... oops.... I also use a '04 and '59 Plate 110's for towing my boat about, also really good for dragging a vauxhall van with a boat on a trailer up a slipway! David P
Take a look at a 40 series Land Cruiser, a far better option.
barneybrendan
nissan d21.I had a crew cab extended pickup from australia and the thing was bullet proof.Would go anywhere and carry or tow anything i tried.Even drove it through a river.Or an old shape swb shogun petrol,we had one of these for launching the dory off the beaches. One night it got stuck and was left running as the sea came in and sunk it.We managed to have a long rope tied to it going up the beach and got a tractor to pull it out.The next day we took a battery and some wd40 and the thing fired up after a bit of cleaning, still going strong now after 6 years. Rob
I had a SIII with Range Rover Diffs and bigger wheels. It could do 80 on the motorway but was incredibly deafening and drank fuel like a cubic metal box doing 80mph. I'd have one again if I could afford it. tony tt
Defender = sore back, deafness at speed, sitting position of a spastic on ecstacy, the only comfort is to drive with the window open so your sitting square at the wheel. I drove one for years at work im sure i still have the dent in my right thigh from the door handle. There bloody awful. Great off road though with the right tyres lol

ozz
When we move I'll have to sell my toy (looking for a farm) so I'm looking at 4x4s. We have a comfy one (kia sorento) so looking for something hardcore and the Jeep Wrangler is ticking the boxes. 5-7k should get a nice 1997-2002 model with all the toys (AT tyres, lift kit etc) and the 4ltr V6 engine looks fun - 0-60 in 8.8 seconds, not bad for a 4x4! Plus, roof off in the summer. I've seen a fully kitted 06 model under 10k but the tax is a killer.

ozz
I should add, i'd love a defender - very rugged looking but i've driven one and its very hard drive and I'll get more for my money with the wrangler. They really hold their value though.
