Chris Wilson
NO FURTHER BACK THAN FLUSH WITH THE PUMP'S FACE!!! Or you will block the bleed hole in the pump. No silicone, fit dry and clean. Use a seal installer to guide the lips over the edge of the crank, or it can force the seal spring off internally, and you won't know until you find it leaks worse than before. If the crank has a wear ridge on it you may find it will never seal properly.
Kirk
Thread jack! Chris, where can you get hold of a decent seal installer?
Chris Wilson
You can make something to guide the seal over the sharp step using thin aluminium foil sticky tape. Just make a cone, if you see what I mean?
