Chris Wilson
I took some in car footage at Anglesey yesterday using a GoPro HD mini cam. It produced 4 sets of footage files, ranging from 1.3 to 2.5 g/bytes in size. My PC is far from modern, it has an AMD 3600+ processor at 2.01 Ghz, and 2 g/bytes of RAM. The videos, played using VLC media player freeze and stutter. Task Manager shows 100% CPU usage, most of the time I try to play them, and the PC is useless for anything else. Is there any way to play them on this machine? What if I copy them to a DVD, would a normal basic DVD player play them on a normal none HD TV? Thanks. ManwithSupra
Are you streaming the file off the camera? If you are then try copying the file from your camera to your desktop first. If you still get major slowdown on playback from your desktop then it will be down to your pc. In which case close any programs that are not needed which are running in the background as this will free up memory and processor. This may help, otherwise there isn't much else you can do unless you start replacing hardware.
Chris Wilson
I had copied the files off the camera memory card to the hard drive, and had closed down everything except VLC. What's the minimum sensible processor and memory requirements for stuff like this to run smoothly? I never play any games or anything, this is the first time this machine has shown its limitations for me. Cheers.
Chris Wilson
Ooops, I found a couple of background apps still running, closed these and they now play OK, seems I am running the old dog of a PC as hard as practical though, maybe time for an update. Thanks for the tip Richard! Would I be able to copy the files, still in MP$ format, to a DVD and expect them to be able to be played on a normal DVD player for a TV? I want to post them to someone. Thanks

TubbyTwo
Are they MP4 files Chris? if you could get them into MPEG-4 they should play in most modern DVD players.

Thanks No problems mate With regards to copying the MP4 file directly to a DVD and it being read in a normal DVD player i am not 100% sure. I think there needs to be certain information on a DVD before it can be run in a standard DVD player hence why you need a DVD creation software, There is windows DVD creator however i think this is only on the newer versions of windows. pistonbroke
Chris, any chance you can upload them to your server, then let me or Scott have a play with them? I'll be able to finalise the end file into something considerably smaller but keep the HD aspect.........plus it'll look cool
Chris Wilson
I can try, at the moment AVS Converter is trying to make the MP4 into an FLV file, which I am hoping will be smaller. It's about half way through. Once it's finished I'll try uploading one of the original MP4 files to my hosted server. Last time I tried this with a 1 gig plus file though, it stalled part way through every time. Thanks for the offer, if I succeed I'll post here and PM you. Thanks again.
