Durandal
Hi guys, I'm having a problem with a howling noise coming from my engine bay kind of like what you would get if you blew air across the top of a bottle. Could this be belts? Or maybe a vacuum leak. It happens at idle and while driving. Also I finally update my garage with some picture, cheers. jevansio
Split hose or hose which is just about to come off (I'm talking boost here so turbo -> FMIC -> throttle pipes)
Bailey.
As above, boost leak somewhere?
mikeyb10supra
is it a u s/ukspec?? could be the dreading death whine Would suggest intercooler coupling split or loose as others have mentioned
Scooter
pop the hood and check your fan spins relatively freely by hand....
Durandal
Its a jspec. I just did a boost test on the IC piping last year but maybe I will check that again
madwoody1
could be the bottom crank pulley mine mad that sort of noise
Abz
Would be good if you could get a video of it up, might help out. Also do you have a FMIC fitted?
Durandal
I just took it for a rip to test turbo spooling through several gears all which seemed fine. The fans spun decently while the engine was off. I noticed the noise again on the way back while cruising in 3rd gear at around 2600 RPM but it sounded more like a bearing now that I listened to it some more. I'm pretty sure it's on the serpentine belt system. The fan looks like it has a bit of a wobble to it while running. I always thought that was kind of normal though. Do your fans look a bit wobbly while spinning?
bobapple
Hope your noise isn't like this I have had some bearings go in the pulley system at the front of the bay you can definitely hear them if it is them they get v.loud

Calorus
When you say "Death" Whine - do we know what the final cause of death was?
Josh
When you say "Death" Whine - do we know what the final cause of death was? I think "death whine" refers to the turbo/s being on their way out. If it's happening at idle too then it's unlikely to be the turbos themselves.

Do your fans look a bit wobbly while spinning? I don't think they do...........i would take off the large fan belt and then hand turn the upper pulleys and see if I can feel loose/roughness/play in any. You could run it briefly like this from cold and see if without this belt the noise is gone.
bobapple
If the belt looks wobbly while spinning you may have a buckled pulley causing strain on the bearings.
fastnfurious
suggest you thoroughly check the followings: - crank pulley (it will delaminate over the years and break into 2 pieces!) - V-belt tensioner pulley - vacuum hoses (possible leakage somewhere) - 1st turbo (death whine = f*cked up turbo!) and last but not least, check if there's a Gremlin hiding under the hood... mikeyb10supra
the j-specs dont whine like the uk's do when there about to blow. The j-specs usually fire themselves out through the exhaust so your going to know if its that
Durandal
Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm almost sure its a bearing starting to go in one of the pulleys in the belt system. I will update my findings when I get some time and a new belt.
Durandal
Ok I'm pretty sure its the tensioner but I'm not sure if I should order a whole new tensioner assembly or an individual part. I'm guessing the wearing part in this is going to be the absorber or the bearing in the wheel. What usually goes wrong with these? Edit: I'm getting ready to do my 96000km service and will be changing the coolant, thermostat, rad cap and vbelt. Is it common practice to change the water pump at this point? Iky
I get a slight howling at high speed but assumed it was from wind flowing through the rear vents. Are you sure its not that?
