suprarob
Hi guys wonderd if you could help went to start the sup this morning and although the engine turns over nice, it wont start. Ive noticed tonight that the telltail engine ligt doesn,t come on at all when the ignition is switched on I,ve had a look at the US site about diagnostic codes but there seems to be no information about trouble shooting the telltail light. has anyone had a similar problem or maybe have a toyota workshop manual to hand? THOR Racing
Check all fuses. Especially in the engine bay, next to the battery The EFI ones especially. There are also fuses in the driver side kick panel. Check all these and then let us know how you get on. Pete
Ian C
Check it's got fuel in the tank! Obvious things like that can be missed Then see if it's got all the stuff it needs to start - fuel reaching the injectors and a spark at the plugs. And could an immobiliser cause this behaviour as well? Hopefully it's just a fuse, though... -Ian
suprarob
thanks for the reply,s guy,s yep checked and double checked every fuse there must be away of checking the telltail light circuit If someone has the toyota workshop manual the procedure will be in that . I might order one anyway I,m just surprised that a toyota wont start
jast
hmmm. sorry to hear that rob, i had a similar pro blem with a corrado, I tried to jump it, bump it, changed the battery the lot, turned out it was a fuse, hidden under the steering column. I know its not a supe but maybe theres a rouge fuse some where, best bet is a auto electrician
Barry
There are two terminals you can short out on the diagnostics plug. This will then flash a certain number of times, what ever the number is, you match it with the number on the diagnostics sheet and it will tell you whats wrong. I do have a copy of the diagnostics list, but its at home. Someone here might know where to find one on the net.? Maybe try Supras.com??
suprarob
Hi Barry the telltail light that flashes when you short these terminals does not come on at all. So I can,t get any sort of reading. Now then as you can probably imagine that messing about trying to start my car the battery has lost alittle bit of its charge so I just charged it up andput it back on the car. the car started then stopped. ? ? ? !!!!!!!! so I disconected it waited................................................................................................................................................................................................................................then reconnected it. thinking resetting the ECU. car would not start. Charge the battery a little as you can imagine its not lost alot of its charge. connect back up again and we have telltail?engine shaped light come on. car starts then stops again. any thoughts. so I don,t think its a fuse.............could be expensive. THOR Racing
Have you tried a new battery? Might be the old one has just enough kick to get it going and then won't hold charge. Sounds unlikely but I'd check it all the same. How about the alternator? Could this be loading the battery/ charging circuit to drain enough juice to make it stall. It's just that it should run with fully charged battery and disconnected alternator for a short while. Maybe try unplugging the alternator (well undoing the bolt which holds the cable on) Could be once the charging circuit tries to pump up the battery the voltage drops and the car does not have enough juice to fire a spark and stalls? I know my 30A alternator fuse blew when I was mucking about with the engine and a spanner close to the battery. The car still ran O.K. for a number of miles between battery off recharges. You've checked all earth straps and on tight? and no corrosion? Same as battery terminals? Just blindly coming up with ideas...... Guest Martin F
Has anybody done any work on the car recently ? If so might want to check the ECU is plugged into the loom properly.
Matt Harwood
I might have missed something in a previous post as I just skimmed over them, but, have you checked that the warning light bulb is alright? - You may be getting diagnostics but if the bulb doesn't work, you aren't going to know...
