Guest dolly1350
Have 1995 mk iv which has been standing for nearly a year. Started ok but appears to be running on the battery. All warning lights except abs, engine management and oil light are staying on. Could this just be the alternator? Got 11 volts across the battery on a multimeter when the engine is running. Also what is the orange oil can display top right of dash? Many thanks if can help.
neo2810
Also what is the orange oil can display top right of dash? Many thanks if can help. Bizarrely, it's an indication to check your oil level....
Guest ugp
Alternator's not charging. Should be 14.4. When my battery went flat (with the car running - dodgy alternator) I got the oil light too. Have you actually got oil in it? As soon as I changed the battery / put leads on it, the light went out. Electrics go haywire when voltage drops. Stick another battery on it and give that a go. Guest dolly1350
Have already done that oil level fine
Guest ugp
Put a different / new battery on it or a booster pack if you've got one. If the alternators not charging you will get the alternator light on (also the low reading across the terminals) but also electrics playing up due to not enough juice to run it properly. Guest dolly1350
Have tried second battery but has made no difference. Can see no other alternative but to change alternator?
Guest ugp
Whats the reading from the 2nd battery? If that isnt at least 13v your going to have eleccy gremlins
Guest dolly1350
Fully charged battery now on reading 12.18 no change. Cost for new alternator £280 so will try to get a refurb.

Chris Wilson
All warning lights on usually indicates a failed regulator or diode pack in the alternator. the brave can rebuild them, the not so brave look for a good used unit. Often the cause is a leaking water pump dripping water into the alternator. Check the little nipple under the water pump for water seepage.
