tbourner
I'm pissed off with my undertray keep coming loose when I go over 70. Can I just take it off? What does it actually do and what are the risks of removing it?
imi
Im taking a guess here. 1) protects some of the parts 2) Aerodynamics
terribleturner
May came off at about 150/60 leptons on the M4 with Rush following me not long ago, so took it off and the only think i've noticed was that the temps went ever so slightly up. Think Homer is running with his off too and not hand any problems.
JohnA
Mine was pulling to the left strongly ever since I bought the car. After verifying tyre pressures/shocks/alignment I found out it was the undertray playing silly boogers (badly installed because some of the bolts were missing/sheared). It disintegrated gradually on the M25 making frightening noises. So check if yours is properly fitted, and if not ditch it before it becomes a problem. It should improve aerodynamics and increase the efficiency of the radiators --- but how much is hard to guess.
merckx
Why don't you just fix it up properly. I wouldn't want dirty salty water being splashed up on the engine. Use some cable ties if the fixing points are no good and you can't be bothered to fix them.
Pete
Just get it fixed on properly. Better to have it for aerodynamics I believe.
Terminator
The undertray is a vital part of the cooling of the car, AFAIK it causes a partial vaccum at the rear of the engine bay at speed forcing hot air out and under the car. personally I would not run the car with out one. If mods force its removal I would design something to take its place. Toyota did a very good job designing this car, the undertray is part of that design, keep it. tbourner
The fixing holes are there all except one on the front (the important one). MaxGT installed a temporary fix so I could drive it but that bit's broken now as well. Not really any way to bolt it up easily without taking the front off or at least the mesh on the bumper. Don't fancy the hassle. Therefore nowhere to cable tie either. Easiest option will be to take it off, but then like you say will the salt water be a problem, or anything bouncing off the motorway into the bay cause damage? JohnA
The fixing holes are there all except one on the front (the important one). One on the front? There's more than one on the front. As other said, if you're stuck then just see if you can use cable ties to secure it. I've been running with no undertray for a few weeks now and have seen no ill effects, but I wouldn't run it like this in the winter. Got a replacement undertay but still haven't got around to fitting it --- need to do whatever I want to do underneath first.
Homer
Interesting topic. Mine was missing when I bought the car so never known what it would be like with one fitted. Anyone got one for sale?
tbourner
One on the front? There's more than one on the front. Yeah, but the one on the front near the middle is broken, and I can't get behind the mesh to fit bolts into the ones on the front sides, so then air gets in the small gap at the front and pulls the whole thing down. JohnA
can't you just drill a hole through the member and use a cable tie? Surely you can think of something....

Jake
jeez guys if you cant get something as basic as an undertray fastened on you may need your mommys to put your petrol in for you LOL! I have the opposite problem, I can't get my undertray off because Dude fitted my Veilside bumper covering over the front undertray bolts so I can't get to them.
