David P
I have had a string of issues with leaking rack oil seals, both old and after rebuilt with new. In desperation I have changed the rack, but have noticed that the fluid level is going down again. I am beginning to suspect it could be the ATI crank pulley which is 6.78" where stock is 5.5". Could this be causing pressure to high for the seals? Has anyone else had any like problem from using this larger crank pulley?
JamieP
I have had the same crank pulley on my car for years without issue.
David P
I haven't heard of this being a problem, but yesterday I fitted a perfectly good rack, washed out the header tank filter and filled up with new fluid, and today the seals are leaking! I can't think what else it could be? I will try and get access to some pressure testing kit and check it.
JamieP
Have you recently fitted a polished PS tank?
David P
A year and 3 racks and 2 rebuilds and 7 or 8 litres of fluid and a crank pulley before, I changed to a T.T. PS tank and gave it a good going over with autosolvosol at the time. Edited April 24, 2011 by David P (see edit history)
JamieP
Just a thought, That stuff is like grinding paste and wont do the inside of ps system a lot of good if it gets in there, Search Lui's old posts, he had a load of trouble after fitting a polished ps tank a few years back, got though a load of pumps/racks/fluid iirc. David P
It's not something I have considered, but it only had a hand rubbing with autosolvosol and a good washing and rinsing through afterwards.
David P
The fluid is pouring straight through the offside boot at around a header tank full an hour, I am suspecting that the rack I have just fitted was damaged during the death of the donor Supra. David P
Sorted at last, it appears that after the Polish roads destroyed the first rack, the next two used ones had been bent during the death of the donors. Third time lucky.
