pistol pete
not sure what its called.. but its the hub part with the wheel studs on it.. and pushes up against the bearing.. i have no idea how they damaged it but when i took it off i found this.. i know i wil have to get a new spring for it as its damaged as you can see in the pics.. but what about the hub part.. its prob cos the hub nut was crossthreaded that the wheel bearing when in the first place.. its a pig of a job at the mo.. but glad i am doing it cos the things i found if it was in a garge would have made it a lot more expensive.. cheers
keef701
The spring is/was part of the oil seal that keeps the grease in and dirt out of the bearings, so should be replaced anyway. The damage shown in the first picture should be able to be dressed out and was probably caused by a previous repair trying to beat the old inner race off. The damage appears just inside the wear pattern of the seal (the shiny ring/polish mark just below the damage in the first picture) What would concern me though is in the third picture where there is the pitting marks to the right of the picture. This is where the second half of the inner race fits. If this is worn then even if you put a new bearing on it will wear again in no time at all. How tight was the old inner race when it was removed? If it is at all slack then a new hub will be needed. Mine was similar a few years ago, but I have access to spiral weld repair shafts etc so could repair the old hub, instead of having to fork out the cost of a new hub. Chris Wilson
That's knackered, it needs renewing. You may well find it also needs a new driveshaft outer C/V joint, too. The rusty dust on the splines indicate they have been fretting.
pistol pete
hmm am i best off getting another whole hub??? and drives shafts... thanks
Chris Wilson
New hub flange, and new driveshaft and nut is safest, but a used shaft that's not worn on the splines and a new hub flange and nut should be OK.
