mawby
The following pictures are from underneath the car looking up. I was trying to trace where my coolant is now leaking from and to me it looks like the water pump. Am I correct, and is it a DIY job to replace? Ric
Radiator out job to change, but easy enough if you got the tools and work methodically, Any where around the front is hard to judge liquids though as the fan could have thrown them around onto surfaces miles from the source
mawby
Those pictures are a bit crappy, this one should be clearer. I've had a good look around, having just replaced the radiator, thermostat and hoses, and the bottom of that pump seems to be the highest point of this latest leak. It's only underneath though and from what looks like a hole in the pump (for draining maybe?)
Ric
yeah there is a hole in the bottom, it usually has a little rubber hose attached to it, but its opened ended, unsure what its for, pressure release or overflow I'm unsure
Scooter
Certainly looks like a new pump required http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?37289-I-ve-got-a-leak.-HEEEELLLPPPP&highlight=pump+hole
mawby
Yeah it does. I suppose the next decision is do I replace the entire pump assembly, or just the pump without the rear housing (maybe possible to fit without needing to take off the timing belt?), or switch to an electric pump? Chris Wilson
That sure looks like the pump. The drain nipple allows leakage past the ceramic seal to exit the pump. Itv usually has a little black rubber pipe on it direct any leakage away from the alternator. I would buy whichever is cheaper, sometimes some pumps WITH backing plates are less than those without. So long as you can get the damper off and are happy removing and refitting the cam belt, timed up right, it's pretty straightforward. It should come with a new gasket, be SURE to scrape ALL of the old one off all mating surfaces. Don't go electric, there's a lot of science in coolant flow, fitting an electric one may well *ugger all that up I have good used pumps.... mawby
If by happy you mean having never done it and probably not having the tools to do it, then yes I'm happy. A quick look at the EPC shows the little drain pipe you refer to didn't arrive until 06/95. Having watched my coolant leave the pump, drip onto the alternator, and then eventually drip out the bottom of the alternator... I think it was a worthwhile addition.
