Gutting a catalytic Converter on a Mazda RX8 - Help...

Has anyone done the above before ?

Spoke to a mechanic briefly today about the problem I had about the loss of power when accelerating and this is something he suggested.

(Looking at getting it compression tested but doesnt seem too bad so might just go with an upgraded starter at a later stage)

Anyway, Im just looking for the steps involved ? Detailed if possible..

Cant ask him again since Ive been on twice to him but I nearly sure he said something along the lines of taking the box off, disconnecting the sensor and then basically just going at it with a rod ??

Would I be right in saying that I need to take the whole cat off or would the back box suffice ???

Sorry about sounding so ignorant but need to be sure (girlfriends car!)

Sold my Supra too by the way

So you've been getting a loss of power and your mechanic has suggested you need to gut the cat to resolve it? I'd say you need to take it somewhere else. I don't see what an upgraded starter would do for it either.

If the cat has collapsed/clogged/melted it could well be reducing power.

Providing you are capable of identifying which is the Cat, then just undo the joint pre and post and pull the thing out??

I was tasked with emissions testing a car for an OEM once. They wanted to test without a Cat and our test car had one. I set to it with a hammer and chisel, but it took a fair bit of persuasion to fully remove. If it's already collapsed then it should be easier to remove. If it's intact then I'd leave it in. Not sure if there are any implications to MOT testing or engine running if you remove it on the RX8
