AndrewOW
My car has now been at my local garage for a couple of weeks now, and I took it there because of an intermittent problem with the power steering. At idle, with the cap off, fluid was bubbling over. I topped it up and bled it, and it was alright for a few miles, then the noise came back and it became very tough to drive again. I've had the reservoir checked/cleaned. The pump was sent away to a specialist, and returned with no faults. The steering rack, although leaking a little bit, wasn't the issue, so it was left that the problem stemmed from the progressive 'feel' solenoid thingy that's attached to the steering rack. That was sent off, and has now been returned (but I don't know if that was the problem). It's currently all being put back together now, but if that still doesn't cure the problem, what else is there that would cause it to work, then not work, etc? I'm desperate to get the car back now, and unless the ECU or fuses are causing the issue, then could it be the speed delimiter, etc? HELP! Andy Blyth
I can think of only 4 points where air could get into the system without oil escaping: the hose barb on the bottom of the reservior, the suction hose itself, the hose barb on the suction side of the pump and the o-ring on the hose fitting of the suction side of the pump. (44337A on the below image) My money would be on the o-ring. Only a couple of quid to replace.
David P
What fluid are you using? it should be Dexron III, Dexron II can cause issues.

I've forwarded that on to the garage. What fluid are you using? it should be Dexron III, Dexron II can cause issues. I don't know what they are using, but I'll mention it. H7ERO
i wouldnt recomend pirtec hose for PAS get a used one from a supra iv had pirtake make me 2 different PAS hoses for diferent cars and both have caused me issues, now id only use OEM if u look at the oem hose inside and out theres no way pirtake are replicating its construction and its made that way for a reason (although i dont know what it it is) i do know iv replaced my PAS system 5 times this year until the only part left to cause the issue was the pirtec hose . . . a plain hose (as pirtec suply) just transfers to much pressure or pulses wrong oem hoses have different thickness sections a steel coil inside the rubber sections and a restricter crimp as for your problem there is a small mesh screen fitted to the bottom of the solenoid on the rack when this is blocked it causes the symtoms you have its only small circa 4mm height and 15mm diameter so is easilly blocked as to the cause of the blockage could be a degraded hose or seal or worn pump (sheding small bits of material) solenoid can be removed with the rack in the car at least worth a check its a well documented problem on other toyotas of a similar era
