Help needed ASAP... Sold my Car today but car suddenly developed a problem... ideas?

My beloved car has been sold to a nice man in Sweden. He took delivery this afternoon and all fine.

 

But unfortunately after 100 or so miles, he turned on the air con and theres a strange rattling noise coming from the back of the engine.

 

If he switches the air con off the rattling reduces by 80%. Also the rattle gets louder when the car turns. i.e turning the steering wheel.

 

However when the engine is cooling down with turbo timer and keys taken out, the noise goes....

 

Any ideas??? I feel bad this has happened after the new owner has only driven it for about 100 miles.

it could be anything mate, aftermarket clutch and flywheel rattling more once its hot...

he needs to get it checked at a performance garage in his country first as it could be something simple or sometimes which i have seen before is people worrying over clutch noises and bangs and clunks especially once its hot..(it does get louder)..

its not on its way out mate, what happens is when it gets hot (ie gets used properly it makes louder bangs and rattles mate).. till it cools down..

Home in Sweden Now.

 

The rattling is still there...

 

After trying different aproches on the way home to find the cause of the noice this is what i found:

 

The car makes the noice when on low rev (up to aprox 2500rpm) but with a strain on it, such as:

 

Accelerating from lower speeds on high gear

 

Idling with A/C on and/or using powersteering at same time

 

motorbreaking

 

So it was mostly noticable when coming to a roundabout at first.

 

And when we came to the harbor we tried to find the cause becouse very noisy at idling.

 

And that was when we found that noice got much lower when A/C was turned off and disappeared totally when ignition was turned off and engine only going on the turbo timer...

 

I dont think it is the clutch making this kind of noice when hot... it is a different rattling noice then when pressing the clutch down... this noice dont change at all with clutch pressed or released...

 

ALSO there is a clonking noice from the transmission? when going between of and on power on the gaspedal, like something is loose ( dont know if this is normal on the manual, as i only driven Auto before )

 

Please help us find out what is wrong...

Check to see if the crank damper bolt is correctly torqued up. A loose damper will rattle, but it will also slowly chew the nose of the crank and the keyway up. Multi plate clutches on a single piece flywheel cause the gearbox internals to rattle, it's juts the way they are, and the reason Toyota used a dampened flywheel. But it is probably NOT that as you say pressing or releasing the clutch pedal doesn't affect the noise.... It's so hard to diagnose noises via the internet

trust me fit a stock clutch and flywheel and you wont have the same noises..

 

this is normal for these cluthces if you take it to a local garage they will tell you car is broke lol...

 

take it to a supra specialist in your country and they will tell you the same..

 

you have been driving basically quiet smooth auto cars and to compare it to a 400 plus supra with twin or triple plate clutch..(its like night and day).

 

if there was a problem the car would of broke in a few miles with all the banging and clunking.

 

the car and clutch aswell as engine/box is fine..

My clutch is rattly as hell, but it's a twin plate with a lightened flywheel so when I press the clutch it's fine and at higher revs it's fine aswell but as Jurgen said it could very well be the clutch

 

You could try swapping it out with a stock one if you know someone with a stock clutch you could borrow to diagnose the problem and see what happens?

When we picked up the car no noise at all and car was cold. Now there is noice directly at startup of cold car, but as said most noice/rattle comes when putting a strain on car , like mid accelaration or pulling from lower speed on higher gear, changing gear to a lower one gives higher rev and less noice...

 

The rattle from when pressing the clutch is a different sound much more high pitch...

 

the other sound is rev dependent...

 

is the clutches supposed to make a lot of noice when just pulling away out of a roundabout on second gear?

 

Or increasing speed gently from 5th or 6th gear in speeds around 60mph... if i put in 4th gear noice dissapears...

my southbend make a rattling noise at bite point and pulling away, sounds as if its ready to fall out the box. But its been fine running 530. Lee checked and says its all good.

yes the clutch will be noisy if your in 5th or 6th from 50 or 60mph..

 

 

basically anything under 3000rpm it will rattle and clunk especially in a higher gear.

lol if you drove my supra you would think it was fubared ! and its got a brand new toyota 6 speed and carbonetics tripple, as said above its just clutch and transmission noise, skylines are just the same on multi plates.

I would like to thank everyone for their advice. Johan, for piece of mind I would get it checked at a Specialist. But as others have said, it might well just be the clutch metal noise. I love the sounds.... people look at the car and thinks its falling apart.

Jurgen: Some questions since you know things about the car...

 

Where is the HKS F-con Piggyback located? Need to get the car mapped as it missfires going through slow corners such as a roundabout... But otherwise good.

The HKS ecu is under the passenger side dash. By the footwell.

Yea take off the passenger side trim, pull back the carpet at the footwell and remove the cover on the black box and there you go
