Scooter
Ok I need to have someone reinforce my logic or alternatively prove me wrong on what is a now long running saga in the office. Now my office has a healthy % of ladies and the obligatory few are on a diet, and one is definitely a 'feeder' The feeder gave me back a bag of M&S Prawn Crackers one lunch as they were on a buy one get one free offer. Now I tuck in and offer them out but the dieters decline and then rather flippantly (the first time!) I say why not, if you ate the whole bag the most you could put on is 50g (ie the whole weight of the bag?) Now this comment resulted in lots of "oh no, it doesn't work like that, your body will convert into more" etc etc Now i'm convinced if you took a person who for the sake of argument is on a diet that exactly covers their dietary needs and then gave them the 50g bag of Prawn Crackers (2.8g Protein, 57.4g Carbohydrates, 31.3g fat 0.8g fibre per 100g's) that they could only gain a maximum of that 50g..........how can they gain more? They think i'm kidding myself that I can gain so little from eating them? I'm convinced I cannot create matter! and that even if I didn't need any of the energy from them the fibre would the very least find its natural way out of my body. So please put me straight or tell me how you would respond to them?

Scooter
my point to them is that it's a little excess every day or week that builds up over a longer period of time........they won't accept my reasoning that the absolute max I can gain from 50grams of food is 50grams! Depends what you mean from Gain? as in weight? or gains? i.e fat or muscle?
Scooter
I mean as anything but lets stick to fat as that is the root of the discussion (whilst we will vary a little none of us are looking to or doing much to change our muscle structure).............if i ate 50grams of lard I could see that if I managed to absorb it all (i'd imagine a fair bit would be excreted out) and had sufficient energy from other food for the day to day stuff that is would all end up stored as fat somewhere.........I cannot see how eating 50g of lard or say 25g of lard 25g of refined sugar can lead to more than 50g of overall gain? Geo
some would be stored, some used a fuel, and some crapped out the following day. I suppose also it depends on the Individual, how well the deal with excess fat. But there is no way you would gain, 50g from 50g.
Scooter
thats exactly what I keep saying to them but they won't have it
Ian C
If they can store over 50g of mass and energy by ingesting less than 50g of mass and energy then they have broken the laws of thermodynamics bigtime, and therefore the universe. But then are you seriously expecting an office full of fat women to have a decent knowledge of physics? Eating little and often is a great way of keeping your metabolism up and therefore burning more calories at idle so in fact it'd be beneficial to snack on that, if combined with a sensible diet and some exercise. But I bet the "e" word won't wash

Ark
Isn't body fat largely made up of water? So IF the entire 50g of food was retained by the body (for the sake of argument), it could be stored up as fat with a good portion of water, total weight being MORE than 50g...but that ignores the initial weight of water also consumed. As above, the body will take the stuff it wants from the 50g of crisps, and store what it doesn't need, which is likely the fatty content. It will store this with other stuff from previous meals and drinks in the form of fat. It's much more likely to store this alongside more of the 'other stuff' than it would if you ate 50g of lettuce - therefore you'll actually gain more fat weight than the 50g. pistonbroke
Is it true, that if your poo floats, it's full of fat, and if it sinks, it's not?. I always poo floaters, which might be the reason for my easily attained athletic figure

Matt H
The only way I can see that you could possibly put more weight on than 50g is like Ark says, which is the combination of the stuff from the 50g with water before storage. 1 pint of water = ~476g. So water could easily bulk it up. i don't know whether this the case, but i do know that your body is about 60% water so there maybe something in it? Anyway, the problem stems with eating you 50grams of rubbish over your normal meals. Anyway, I'm in pretty decent shape and I never look at weight of product, just calorie content.
